Default Aaarrrrgghhh car dealers !!

So I went into Gm in Kelowna to buy a new Silverado, the website said there would be a $6780 + $1000 loyalty for owning a Chevy .

I met the sales guy who said that the offer I saw was not for BC even though I clarified this with Chevy.ca apparently they would only allow $5000 at this dealership....... Surely this is not correct and they are trying to con me out of hard cash!

Any thoughts or experiences on this??

This is about Alberta but I'm sure it happens in BC.

I was just reading that article! It seems typical

$5 is fine but the promised $6780 plus $1000 so it's a big difference

Print out the offer of the web site and take it in to them. If you are right, they cannot dispute what is in print. If they refuse to honour it call GM Canada. Not much else to do.

Go to another dealer....when I was quoting a new F150 last year, the sales guy knocked $13000 off without even trying

Also consider looking at unhaggle and carrotst canada. You *might* be able to combine that with whatever other incentives.

As Aviator said, print it out, have a good read of the small print, then take it into the dealer and ask them wether they will offer it or not. If not, find another dealer.

You don't want a V6, if your getting a new one get a V8.

Just go to a different dealer, some dealers are more willing to help a customer then others are.

Our local dealer for Toyota and Ford for example had no interest in trying to get us into a car, so we went to another dealer who bent over backwards to help us.

Dealers in smaller regions with a more captive customer base seem less eager to deal.

Looking at the chevy website, I don't see anything excluding BC unless for some reason it's prohibited by law in BC for some reason which seem's to be the only exclusion if you meet the other requirements.

It's a crock of S**t - shop with your feet.
Why give them any commission when you can get the same car somewhere that treats you better?

When we bought our first car we were buying brand new. We used unhaggle.com. It gave Husband the dealer's purchase price of the car, then sent his details to a local dealer. The local knew that my husband had come through unhaggle, thus knew the purchase price of the car, and from reading around we knew that the dealerships look to make about $1000 on that category of car... our negotiation with the guy lasted about 30 seconds. I think he agreed something like 2.5% above invoice over email, and said he may be able to get the manage to agree to 2%. I think we settled on 2.2% in the end or something similar. Really convenient, highly recommend. That was with Hyundai.

Our experience with Mazda was completely different. We had the invoice price but didn't have our details sent onwards. We test-drove the car, then had the following exchange:

Sales Rep 1, "NewKid": So are you looking for cash or financing?

Us: Both are an option. We would like to know the cash price as well as the financing price and terms.

NewKid: Okay, let me go talk to the finance manager. *leaves, comes back*

NewKid: That will be $x per month with $x up front for financing.

Us: Over how long? What percentage financing is that?

NewKid: Uh, I'm not sure, let me go ask. *leaves, comes back*

NewKid: Okay, the finance manager said he can do it for $x monthly instead of what I said before, same down payment up front.

Us: Uhhhh you didn't answer the question of what percentage that is, and over what term. Forget financing. How much if we want to pay in cash?

NewKid: Uhhhh let me check. *leaves, Sleazeball comes back*

Sleazeball: Hi, I'm Sleazeball, I understand you're interested in the new Mazda 3. Great car! You'll love it, I can already tell it's perfect for you. So that will be $x per month with $x up front. Shake my hand now.

Us: Uhhhhh what the hell. No. Forget financing. How much if we want to pay in cash now?

Sleazeball: Why would you want to pay in cash? Cash is king! Would you not want to keep more cash in your bank account instead of rwiting a big cheque today?

Us: Um, no, we want the best deal overall, and you haven't been able to tell us what percentage financing you're offering, nor for how long. We just want to know how much the car is going to cost.

Sleazeball: But why wouldn't you want to pay monthly instead? Then you keep more cash in the bank for longer! Cash is king!

Husband: I work in investment banking. Don't talk to me about interest and capital. Just tell me how much for the damn car.

Sleazeball: Okay, name your price.

Husband: Fine, how about [some price well under what we know their invoice price is].

Sleazeball: Um, I'd have to check. If I can get the finance manager to agree to that price, can I earn your business here right now? *holds out hand to shake it*

Us: Uh, well, no, we have not yet test-driven all the cars we are interested in.

Sleazeball: What else are you considering?! Why would you consider anything else?!

Us: Um, we have two others, one we've already driven and liked, the other we are going to next.

Sleazeball: Guaranteed you won't like those cars. Guaranteed you will be back here to buy this car from me. That's a promise.

Us: Forget it. *walked out*

We never ended up finding out what he would have sold that car to us for in cash, nor what percentage financing they were offering. Seriously, WTF. We went to the third dealership but they were sold out of the car we were looking for, so went back to Hyundai and made our purchase.

At least we felt like we got the quintessential sleazy car salesman experience. Do not recommend.

That was late 2013. About 6 months ago we started looking for Car #2, and knew we wanted a used VW Golf Wagon, 2010 or newer. So Husband just kept an eye on the listings, got an idea of what the car should sell for roughly, and then whenever ones were available we just went to see it and went from there. The first two were at a used car lot out towards St Catherines, but neither car looked to be in great condition, so we walked away. Another was available at a dealership nearby and had been on the website for a few weeks and had been reduced in price once. Since it had been there awhile, we decided to go see it. Decent mileage, great condition, price was a bit high. Husband just negotiated quite hard, and was completely prepared to walk away from it if it didn't come down to what he thought was more fair for the car. And we nearly did, too - the guy was really playing hardball, and at one point we stood up to leave, he stopped us and said he'd go talk to his boss. His boss came in, said he couldn't go as low as we wanted (which we knew was probably not realistic anyway but wanted them close), then the guy left, and we said sorry, couldn't go that high - we had a top budget and wouldn't be moving from it. As we stood up to leave, the boss called and offered us a price thatw as only about $200 above our "top budget". We haggled a bit more and ended up at $100 over our "top budget"... down something like $2k from what they were first asking for the car. We were happy as that price was roughly in line with other used cars of similar age and mileage we'd seen, plus was about in line with the Black Book value.

So my advice is don't be afraid to walk away and take your business elsewhere. There will be other cars at other dealerships, and some sales guys will be better than others.

(1.5 years later and I'm still not sure I've washed all of the Sleazeball experience off of me!)

I know guys that own the V6 3.5ltr ecoboost and they pretty much get the same MPG as I do with the 5ltr V8,except I don't have to worry about turbo's failing.

Yeah, you don't want the V6...End of.

Oh and there is a Jeep out there - don't know what model/year as I wasn't really paying that much attention (oops) that has a problem with the fuse box and it needs replacing at a cost of $2-3k and it's not being covered under warranty. It's a known problem, a recall will cost them too much money.

Base engine on the 2015 F150 is a V6. Then you have two Ecoboost twin turbos - 2.7 and 3.5L. Plus the V8. I ran a 2013 F150 3.5 Ecoboost and average 16.7L per 100km. I only put 24k on the truck in 2 years so it was barely run in when it went back off lease. As a lease of course, I didn't have to worry about the turbos failing (which they didn't) or, indeed the brake rotors needing replacing. (which they did, under warranty).
