I think it depends on the job. If it's a short fixed-term thing then 1 week is probably adequate.

In Canada, for my permanant staff I expect two weeks notice from them, if they leave sooner thats inconsiderate and wont bode well for the very detailed references one has to give here.


When I left my last position I negotiated giving them 4 weeks notice as I intended absolutely no bridges to be burned.


This is a small province, burning bridges is not a great idea.

Same here. Here's a story - I hired a guy for a role in a previous company. He'd just relocated back here from another province. He came in for the first day and then didn't show up the second day but phoned up to say that he'd decided to continue to do his old job remotely as that worked out better for him. Nice that he had that option but it would have been useful if he'd have worked out that was his preferred approach prior to accepting my job. I had to scrabble to get the second choice candidate to start in a hurry. Scroll forward n years and the same guys resume came across my desk when I was hiring for my current employer. Needless to say he didn't get an interview.
