Even at $2550/mth rent for that basic semi, add on top $300/mth for all in utilities (water, hydro, gas) + whatever cost for tenant insurance, security deposits for all sorts of things, small repaint or wallpaper for the kids rooms, furnishing the place, appliances, TV purchase - the average all in cost spread over a 12 month rental is going to be more the $3000/mth mark, I'm guessing close to $3500, which is 50% of his salary.

Of course the one off capital cost expenditures, hotel etc should be ignored

OP, needs also to take into account the first month settlement costs, ranging from - living in a hotel, meals, taxi etc $$$$$
All those numbers seem reasonable enough and reinforce the advice generally offered that the move is feasible but is unlikely to provide a significant improvement in material standard of living. Personally, I'd be no more likely to move from London to Canada than from London to Doncaster if there was no money in it, but there are people who like Toronto and others who value the experience of being abroad, no matter where "abroad" may be.

Thanks everyone, especially for the links. Swansea / high park area is where we were thinking beforehand. A few of the guys from work cycle in from around there and recommend it too. Can't find many rental properties coming up there though which suggests its in high demand.

We're going to ask for a bit more as 50% of income on housing doesn't leave much for anything else in my book, and it currently feels like a pay cut in real terms. Thanks again, fingers crossed..

At least it's a semi detached house. Whatever that means.

Could be paying 2k plus for an apartment which is not unusual these days in some city's and regions.

I used to live in Bloor West Village and later just off Roncesveiles. You can't do better if you need to get to Spadina in 30 minutes.

Like dbd33 I eschewed Swansea because it was, in those days, dry.

A single building containing two dwellings, each of which includes a ground floor area. A "duplex" in some jurisdictions. Typically, a purpose built semi-detached is in two symmetrical halves with the central wall dividing the two halves.

In Toronto a duplex is typically a building consisting of two apartments. There are also triplexes. I haven't heard of octoplexes or dodecaplexes.

What does "dry" mean? No local pubs or something?

we have side by side duplexes, front and back duplexes, and upper and lower duplexes here ............ but the term "semi-detached" is not used

does $125k represent the going rate for your job in canada and the GTA or would $175k be possible.

$50k pay cut seems a lot as the cost of living is much the same. does your company want you to move if they do they may be persuaded to pony up on the wages. but i dont suppose that would be 50k more than your Canadian colleges

Fair comment. It probably comes down to housing/commuting costs rather than a "pay cut". If the Toronto colleagues average less, then it would be hard for the OP to argue that he need a similar salary as he would command in London (with very high housing/commuting costs). Certainly daily living / lifestyle costs in Canadian cities seem on par with Britain, and often slightly higher.
