Default A week in Cairns - where to stay?

Hi all,

Looks like we're going to be in Cairns for a holiday in July - just 5 nights. Where is the best place to stay?

We're thinking of doing AirBnB or an apartment type hotel probably. Have never been to this area before so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

We stayed in an apartment in the Cairns Aquarius building a couple of years ago.
It was perfect for us as a family of four adults; spacious and very centrally located. The Esplanade restaurants were practically next door, shops very close, reef boats and lagoon a short walk away. Gets good reviews on TA.

Thanks NickyC. Looks nice but nothing available for our dates unfortunately. I guess that's what we get for choosing the school holidays.

Cairns Holiday Apartments | 181 The Esplanade

We stayed here last Oct. Reasonable rates, tours pick up and drop off from there and a 5-10 min walk from the hustle and bustle - just long enough to walk off your evening meal

Aquarius would be my number one choice too. Pity it's booked out.

In January we stayed at The Edge apartments at the North end of the Esplanade. We had a superb, large and comfortable apartment at a very competitive price. It's in the flight path (not a real problem in Cairns) and half an hour walk from the main hub or a few minutes by car. Car parking in central Cairns can be a nightmare; at meal times for example. We were at the Southern end of the complex nearest to the city. The other end is next to a backpackers so noise might be an issue.

If you don't want to be in the city Palm Cove is a favoured destination although I prefer the quieter and more economic version, Trinity Beach. Both places usually offer hotel pick-ups for tourist attractions and eating out locally is not a problem at either.

Thanks Bix and Rasen,

We have actually ended up at Trinity Beach, so fingers crossed. The place looks nice and price was reasonable considering we'll be there in the school holidays.

Trinity Beach is nice, its about 15kms from Cairns and doesn't have the large selection of Restaurants, Bars etc but a good place for a break.

This is a bit late for you Kiwikaye, but any info helps. I live in Cairns and can say that Trinity beach is ok, the weather may be a little wild that time of the year so swimming may be a problem, i hope you have a car.
There are 5 restaurants and a bar in the area but they unfortunately pulled down the best one, a small quaint cafe on the seafront so they could re-develop with bland cement fronted shops which have only just been started.
10 minutes drive north takes you to Palm Cove which is the jewel of the north and 15 minutes drive south takes you to Cairns itself.

Thanks Jeff. Any recommendations for a really nice restaurant in the area (we will have a car) for OH's 50th birthday night? We will have the kids with us, so something suitable for them as well.

Thanks!

For a good all rounder that caters for kids as well you probably cant go wrong with the Bluewater Tavern at Trinity Park, 5 minutes drive south of where you will be.
