Here and post apartheid South Africa I've found to be friendly. Zambia in the mid 80s were very unfriendly. They wanted us to bribe them for a visa and when we refused (and the woman I was with yelled at them) we were escorted back over the border at gunpoint. Women, huh?

Yeah, they're usually pretty nice on return with the big "welcome home". The only times I've ever had a hard time at immigration was at Heathrow and US immigration at Toronto Pearson (you clear US immigration before boarding there)
Strange that they should have a less pleasant clique on departures. Did they greet you cheerily when you returned?
