Streaming update:
BBC iplayer has been running much better recently and hardly ever buffers now - both on Roku and PC
4oD and 5 on the other hand are buffering terribly at the moment - and the pommy ads on 4oD are f**king annoying. Tried to view a documentary on 5 the other night and it was unwatchable due to buffering - on the same connection that I had been streaming HD perfectly on Netflix a few minutes earlier
Roku have done a firmware update on the 3 model that has affected its DNS settings - now a pain to stream Netflix on it. The Roku 3 is a great bit of kit but the inabilty to change DNS settings on it is now a major PITA. The UK model is unaffected
I'm about to order an Amazon Fire TV (USD99) so looking forward to seeing how it goes. It does look good and can change DNS locally - yay!

Re: Streaming video - my experience
I started watching e01 on iplayer last night - and was dismayed to see that that Australia-hating, MMGW loving, socialist asshole Tim Flannery is in it. I'll struggle to watch a series with him spouting his shite. Coincidence that James Price Point was featured? I think not
It is beautifully filmed though (amazing in HD) - as only the BBC can do

I didn't get on very well with The Roku either so ended up getting the apple tv instead. So do you think we would be better off getting the Chrome cast.I have downloaded the app on to my phone. Is it fairly straight forward to use.Its mainly the iplayer I am interested in.Thank you.

We've settled for a little nettop PC hooked up to our telly with a small wireless keyboard and mouse. With this we can view everything from Netflix to through iPlayer, 4od, youtube, live Sky News, the lot
An added plus with the nettop is we also have a cordless skype phone connected to it which is on 24/7. It's like having a another landline in the house for cheap local, national and international calls.

DO NOT get a Chromecast - you will have the same problems as you got with the Roku. It has potential but is not there yet
Apple TV is a half-arsed solution
A Home theatre PC is a great idea (I have one) but probably more than you need. Also a lot of streaming services - C4 and C5 in the UK for instance - are terrible in Windows
Get a Samsung Bluray player with their Smarthub setup
Dick Smith have last year's model, the BD-F6500, on sale this weekend (either with free delivery or click and collect pick-up) for $124.95 - a real bargain (best UK price $198)
I have this player and it works - you can change the DNS settings on it and will be able to configure it to any country that you want. It is also a great DVD player with streaming and USB media playback
There is plenty of info online on how to set it up. It is very easy and I can help you too
If you have a couple of grand to play with get a Samsung Smart TV - the very best, one piece of kit solution IMO

All these other gadgets and dongles seem like a good idea and they might be cheap ways of streaming video to the spare TV but on a heavier usage one a wider range of viewing options is needed.
