Tropical Cyclone Iris - North/Central Queensland Coast
TROPICAL CYCLONE INFORMATION BULLETIN
For 11:16 am EST on Monday 2 April 2018
At 10 am AEST Monday, Tropical Cyclone Iris (Category 1) with central pressure
995 hPa was located over the Coral Sea
near latitude 16.9 south longitude 148.7 east, which is about 310 km east of
Cairns and 330 km northeast of Townsville.
The cyclone is moving southwest at 13 kilometres per hour.
Tropical cyclone Iris has redeveloped in the Coral Sea off the tropical
Queensland coast.
Tropical cyclone Iris is expected to continue moving southwest for most of the
day today, before becoming slow moving tonight. On Tuesday the system is
expected to turn east and move away from the Queensland coast. It may develop
further, but is not expected to cross the Queensland coast.
Damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall are possible about coastal and island
areas between about Rollingstone and Sarina as the cyclone makes its closest
approach to the coast. A severe weather warning is current for these
conditions; refer to that product for more information.

for DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL
For people in parts of Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays Forecast Districts.
Issued at 11:33 am Monday, 2 April 2018.
Weather Situation:
At 10am Tropical cyclone Iris was located approximately 330km northeast of Townsville and moving slowly southwest. It is expected to move southward and track closer to the coast today, before moving more southeastward on Tuesday. There remains some level of uncertainty regarding its movement and development over the coming days.
Damaging winds, with peak gusts in excess 100km/h, may develop about the coast, islands and higher terrain within the warning area between Townsville and Sarina during Monday evening or Tuesday morning.
Heavy rain, which may lead to flash flooding, is also expected to develop later today, particularly between Ayr and Sarina. Six hour totals of 50 to 100mm are likely, with local falls up to 150mm possible. 24 hour totals of 200mm are possible.
A Flood Watch for coastal catchments between Rollingstone and Sarina is current.

Intensity: Category 1, sustained winds near the centre of 75 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 100 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 55 kilometres of 17.2 degrees South 149.0 degrees East, estimated to be 345 kilometres east of Cairns and 325 kilometres northeast of Townsville.
Movement: south at 6 kilometres per hour.
Tropical cyclone Iris redeveloped in the Coral Sea off of the tropical Queensland coast earlier this morning, and has been moving slowly southwards and intensifying during Monday.
Tropical cyclone Iris is expected to continue moving slowly to the south during Tuesday while continuing to intensify, before curving more to the southeast, parallel to the Queensland coast on Wednesday. At this stage, the cyclone is not expected to cross the Queensland coast, but may approach the coast close enough to produce significant impacts.
Hazards:
GALES extend outwards to 150 kilometres from the centre and may develop about coastal and island communities between Ayr and St Lawrence, including Mackay and the Whitsunday Islands, early Wednesday morning.
Heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding may develop during Tuesday and Wednesday. A flood Watch is current for coastal catchments between Rollingstone and St Lawrence.
Recommended Action:

Tropical cyclone Iris remains a category 2 cyclone off the Herbert and Lower Burdekin coast.
Tropical cyclone Iris is expected to continue moving slowly to the southeast, parallel to the Queensland coast, for the next two days while slowly intensifying. On Thursday the cyclone should slow down and begin to weaken. It may reverse direction and adopt a track to the northwest overnight Thursday or on Friday. The cyclone is not expected to cross the Queensland coast in the short to medium term, but may approach the coast close enough to produce significant impacts.
Hazards:
DESTRUCTIVE WINDS are occurring close to the core of the cyclone. These DESTRUCTIVE WINDS may impact the coastal fringe and islands between Bowen and Mackay, including the Whitsunday Islands, from early Wednesday morning if the cyclone takes a more southerly track than expected.
GALES may develop about coastal and island communities between Ayr and Sarina, including Mackay and the Whitsunday Islands, from this evening or early Wednesday morning. These GALES may then extend south to St Lawrence later on Wednesday.
Heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding may develop during Tuesday and Wednesday. A Flood Watch is current for coastal catchments between Rollingstone and St Lawrence.
