Actually I don't want them to end up with a political battle - I take the view that politics is a cluster*****. Talking about automation was just that - talking about what forthcoming automation would do to society and how the technology works - mainly because of some interesting developments doing so fairly spectacular things. Similarly I started a thread on space (coz that interests me), which thus far has kept away from politics. I also start topics on Australiana, like why the hell do bogans sit in garages recreationally? I've even started not correcting wrong statements if they are based on pure political ideology - if only because it's like banging heads on a brick wall.

In the end I don't think it's that. Rather it's that online communities are fairly unstable things and in particular things like BE rely on a flow through of people - which seems to have dried up. In part I think the point is that those originally looking to migrate end up in the subboard, but don't necessarily transfer across to the main board when they eventually move (if they do with how bad the visa situation now is).

I stayed with BE for well over 10 years as the subjects being discussed gave me another perspective on hot topics in Australia: but there's not enough diversity now.

I have never used Be for info on migration. I always tried to steer people from their agonising and the cliches..and outline the scenarios where things will probably go wrong and where things will pr0bably go right..you could see patterns over the years.

I think you're spot on with this, if there's the remotest chance of a thread topic being hijacked and turned into the same old political/ideological argument that can be found on a thousand other threads, then as sure as eggs is eggs, it will be.

Sometimes the pointless but fun threads are the best, I miss them

Obviously not. Australia windows are lefty metric, whereas British windows are imperial and right wing.

There are adaptors you can order from Amazon. A drone will deliver. Thread hijacked at the mere mention of left wing automation.

Personally, I don't post as much because I'm always checking BE on my phone and it's not as easy to type a response as it is when sitting at your computer keyboard.

Anyone else refrain from posting a long response because they're on their phone?
I either get on my tablet and/or engage my new wireless lightweight keyboard. Its brilliant. You should get one. Can engage it from either my phone or tablet.

Originally I was a tad confused by the subject, but I think I have it now. Isn't smart phone an oxymoron? I assume that you refer to the device that sits constantly on charge downstairs and barks like some demented monkey mostly when I am upstairs in my office, and promptly shuts off whenever I approach to within a metre? How smart is that?

Tablets however I am comfortable with, as I take loads every morning. I am a bit bothered that bakedbean has to take tablets so large as to be able to get onto them. I wish you well for the future, despite the seemingly awful medication...

Right, enough of this drivel!

Horses for courses: I use the 'phone (always assuming it can bear to be unplugged for a couple of minutes) for text messages and the odd 'phone call. I have a camera if I want to take a photo, etc etc.

The tablet is for 'read only' late night sofa-surfing and also playing games such as Piquet and Bezique when I'm bored with TV.

Maybe I'm just an old fart (yeah! roared the crowd), but if I want to do anything web-related then it's computer all the way for me.
