NSW to ban greyhound racing

What do you think? Justified or nanny state? Should other states follow suit?
I have to admit it seems to me like a sport where a lot has gone on and continues to go on with many a blind eye turned...too many bad apples despite the many that I'm sure do care for their dogs.

Re: NSW to ban greyhound racing
Well qld being qld they will not want to copy what nsw does obviously so i see a lot of revenue heading our way because of this.Ifhowever they do ban it i see a lot of long feet warmers at the bottom of the bed in winter Strange how this seems to have just crept up so to speak without warning when there's been such a hoo hah up here over the last yr or so where several top trainers have been banned rightly so from the sport and i believe criminal proceedings are still in operation which well see the jailing of certain people. All in all not a good day for the honest people involved unfortunately

I went greyhound racing over here once. I came last.
Seriously though, it is a good call. No point in investing in yet more reviews or investigations when these guys have already had a second chance. But if the dogs all have to be put down now, it would be a bit of a bitter victory.

Re: NSW to ban greyhound racing
Pretty much a no brainer a greyhounds life in nsw will only last one more year in the vast majority of cases unfortunately. As they say greyhounds are for racing .... not for life. Sad but true !

Or they will be left to roam the street. I'd adopt one if they weren't such tiresome streaky things.

Probably a good idea overall but the current timeframe announced yesterday is unrealistic
Livelihoods and jobs are going to be lost - especially among the people in the industry who do not breed and train dogs. The people who clean the tracks or sell burgers etc. What about them?
The current NSW government is doing a good job but they do take the nanny state to a new level

Re: NSW to ban greyhound racing
As for racing them, sorry no, dont agree with horse racing or jumping or greyhounds. In Vancouver friends own a race horse breeding farm. The cruelty in that industry is hard to stomach. Horses were put down all the time, useless in a race, kill it, horses are expensive pets so that rarely happens. Plus the training is harsh, and cruel. I really cannot imagine greyhound racing would be any better.
But yes end of the industry wont mean well for those already in existence. they mean nothing to the owners.

It's not just the dogs themselves...it's the live baiting.
Snooping around on greyhound forums it becomes immediately obvious that the practice is widespread...you just don't talk about it openly. But owners know it happens...a lot...and there is a perception that live baited dogs perform better than others...so it goes on, as hush hush as possible.

Dogs hold a special place in western society - they are our friends and deserve better

Dogs today, horses next week. The racing industry is huge (dogs and horses) with many jobs at stake so this is rather a sledgehammer to crack a nut kind of situation. ACT has quickly followed suit - anything to retain the PC mantle!

The decision is sudden but it's also quite late. Many animals could have been saved if it was acted upon sooner. Giving animal killers a second chance was the mistake.

Hopefully that ban that ridiculous chariot racing too - Spartacus would be spinning in his grave at how lame that is...

Re: NSW to ban greyhound racing
They're lovely family dogs with very sweet natures and they don't make good watchdogs for that reason. Having short hair they don't shed much. They're firmly inside dogs, as their short hair and low body fat makes them intolerant of temperature extremes. They're also very clean doggies.

I wish the UK would catch a touch of the nanny state and ban that bloody Grand National. I can't think of any 'sport' much worse than forcing horses over those stupidly high jumps, and we've all seen how it can and does go horribly wrong.
