Norfolk island
Brit media has been reporting on this recently. My synpathies are with those on Norfolk Island who want to run their own show but I suspect there are complexities that escape me
Canberra will run Norfolk Island – but not all the locals are happy

Re: Norfolk island
I'm reminded of something we learnt in the 1970s when we lived in the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) in the South Pacific near Fiji - a piece of expat lore dating back to the beginning of World War I in 1914. Decades before, Germany had begun picking up islands in the Pacific, and in order to forestall any German move on the New Hebs, France and Britain decided to share control of them. Britain's diplomatic relations in the region were barely closer with France than with Germany, and with all the political tension in Europe at the time, it wasn't certain who would end up being allied with whom, in a SHTF situation. It was three months after actual fighting had started in Europe that the people of New Hebs learned that Britain was allied with France against Germany, and not with Germany against France. Tense times, we can imagine!
