Default Melbourne More Expensive That London

According to these stats.

http://www.theage.com.au/national/me...1003-ggvm.html

http://business.timesonline.co.uk/to...cle6859434.ece

And considerably more expensive than the UK average - and I realise that Melbourne is a city but realistically most of us have to live there for work, whereas in the UK the choice to live outside London is definitely an option.

So, weather aside - why would people still bother to emigrate?

I also fail to understand where all the money comes from for these price rise - understand the market economy, but I just can't relate Aussie salaries to these massive house prices.

People must be having absolute rubbish lives just to meet huge mortgage payments.

Location is probably one answer.
People do have the same options to live outside major cities in Australia also.

Another thing is: which median prices are being quoted ?

The median price of Established Houses in Melbourne in Dec 2008 was $385,000.
according to: 6416.0 House Price Indexes: Eight Capital Cities
Tables 7 and 8. Median Price (unstratified) and Number of Established House Transfers

If you then compare to wages:
Male weekly Income $1,266.40
Female weekly Income $1,039.60
Total Annual Combined Income = $119,912
Median Established House Price = $385,000
A multiple of 3.211
Then compare to the UK
According to the National Statistics’ Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, the UK “mean” gross annual earnings in 2008 for full-time employees, was £31,323 (Median was £25,123)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8151355.stm

The UK Average house price was £224,064 according to the BBC
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/h...tml/houses.stm

Total Annual Combined Income = £62,646
Average property price = £224,064
A multiple of 3.577
Greater London, average house price quoted is now £352,355

COL in Australia is on a par with the UK.

I fail to see where people are assuming it would be cheaper. Smaller population base to spread costs over and all that.

It does not surprise me now the number of people coming over with big dreams with no sense of reality. When reality bites they either run with it (as per there nature) or react and survive or move to MBTUK
