Manchester EXPO
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has ever been to a previous expo? There's one on this coming Sunday and it sounds good, but we still got another 2 years at least before we can go so I was unsure if it is already worth it - GBP 15 per person to get in - or if we'd get more out of it next year.
Apart from that there's a wedding fair on at the same day and there's no way I get Ian to do both in one day (and that would be my first wedding fair EVER since we only just got engaged).
Anyone been before?
Mel

Hi Mel,
I am going to be attending an expo this weekend at the Palace Hotel in Manchester - http://www.expo-australia.com/visit_expo.aspx
I know someone that went last year and they said it was really worth while, and they found lots of information on how to apply for a visa and made some great employment contacts!

Re: Manchester EXPO
Have to agree in part with what you say. I went to the last one in manchester and it didnt do anything to help me - I hadnt started the process then and this site provided far more info to me than the expo did. This time Im going with my visa due in the very near future and i want to speak in person to the banks and also the education departments are going to be there and i want to talk over the possibilities of retraining once i arrive. I think charging £15 is a bit excessive but am hoping it will be money well spent.

Does anyone know what you need to take in order to open a bank account? Is it just your passport?

Re: Manchester EXPO
Did anyone go today? Althought I got something out of it I would not recommend people paying 15 squid for it. I got there just after 10 (bearing in mind it opened at 9.30) and people were already heading out which worried me.
I am not dissapointed from the day as all I wanted was to be able to speak to some people from Canberra and talk about employment in the public service there. However, if I was a Brit born and bred and went there for info - I would say - don't do it - as you could get the info off mainly expats and off the interent.
What was interesting is - a couple of the stalls were familiar with this site - guess word is getting around.
If you can, don't spend your money on this expo as it really is not worth it.
I was really excited about going and did get what I was after but I am not going to oz on a visa. I'm sitting here, with tired feet, thinking that those who are going through the visa process, which represents most of the people on this site - you really won't get your moneys worth.
I got there at 10 and left at 12.00 and that is after attending a session and queuing non stop. I was really shocked at the few stalls. Several are the stalls re specialist stalls and wont cater for everyone.
Save you dosh and pick the brains of those who attended or use this site as you do or use the internet.
I think the concept of this expo was spot on, but there simply were not enough stalls to cover the different areas. The only reason we were there for two hours was because of the queues so I did a circuit of the stalls in the hope the queue I was targeting was smaller by the time I returned.

I too dont think it was worth £15 but I did achieve everything i had planned to do so Im a happy bunny.
Opened bank account with Westpac, I know you can do this online but i wanted to speak to someone in person, they were very good, photo copied 3 proofs of identity and verified it all there and then so they say i wont have to wait until i arrive in Oz to start moving money around over there if need be (getting rentals etc sorted), they also advised me to open the savings account which would look after my money from sale of house more efficiently. I opened account with Ozforex so am now in a position to move my winnings from tonights lottery over when i feel like it (always presuming i win of course ) Best part was speaking to a lovely lady from education WA, about the possibility of retraining when i get there. SHe was fantastic, gave me lots of info relevant to me ( i got lost on their website) and gave me contact details regarding a bursary i may be entitled to on arrival whilst training. My son and i were probably only in there 45 mins max but achieved all i set out for - £15?? bit steep but im glad i went.
Did think though that this site ought to have a stall there and kill all birds with one stone
