How do MODS decide....
......where threads should go..
In the aus forum - I have seen off-topic threads (that now go in here)....but what about the repeated sport threads that remain on the forum...instead of going into the Locker Room, or those threads that are/become political or argumentative - tht should go in TIO?

Personally, I think the more movement around BE the better....but then again..I'm not a Mod

Re: How do MODS decide....
I think the problem faced by the mods is that there's no natural progression through the site. I guess it should go like this - 1) You want to move to Oz, you Google, you find the forum, you make your first post in the Australia form, 2) You ask all the same questions we all asked when we were new, 3) You get a visa and your post count to the Australia forum goes through the roof 4) You piss off to Oz, you stop posting (no PC, no Internet, rather more pressing concerns on your hands), 5) You get a bit settled and make your 'We are here!' post, 6) You either start whinging about Oz and begin working out how you're going to get back (in which case it's off to the Moving Back to the UK forum) or you settle in and start making a new life. In either case there comes a point where we're supposed to become British Expats-proper and move off to the Lounge and the other more general parts of the site, because the country we're living in just becomes home and banter-with-brits becomes your main focus. However ... as many of us have discovered, the Lounge is a pretty nasty place frequented by a lot of very bored expats all with their own little history and your chances of elbowing your way in there without having to endure loads of patronising shit from the resident bar-flys are very low indeed. Hence a load of people who probably would have moved on to the Lounge have hung around the Australia forum and evolved their own little cliques, in-jokes, back-story and (if you're Scottish) pish. And it's these folks that generate the threads you refer to and it's because of the reasons I've outlined above that the mods probably figure it's okay to keep the threads live. That said, with the new Ozzie Lounge in place, we'll probably see an increase in threads moved into the new section and, I suspect, far more rigid rules regarding what is and isn't off-topic. So long as the atmosphere remains friendly in the lounge (and on initial impressions I'd say there was next to **** all chance of that) then everyone should be happy. Here endeth the lesson.

Some good points there. I think the problem has been that there really isnt much on offer for those of us who are already out here and settled and just want to swap stories, have a laugh and chat about our lives IN Australia. I find it quite amusing that the site is called British Expats yet most of it is geared towards those who dont yet fit into that category!! I'm not for one minute saying that there shouldnt be immigration forums and avenues for those yet to come, but for those of us who are here and settled this forum will be a good thing.
As for the lounge, i dont really visit there. I prefer to chat to people about my life here in Aus and people who know what i am talking about

Don't agree with fragmentation of the forum into specialised zones as it leads to a dilution and downgrading of the information imparted.
As an example the Lifestyle forum is not for immigration issues. Yet after obtaining a visa how many people venture into the immi forum ? Very few I suspect. That leads to a loss of valuable input.
I have helped many people with questions on sponsored visas but only because they posted in the Lifestyle forum where they are not supposed to. I have rarely ever gone into the Immi forum.
I would rather see one large Aus forum with each thread having a compulsory categorisation tag so everyone knew what it was about.
