I would have thought some of you old school fisherman would like old-school gear.

Hadn't realised there was gadgety involved...

A source for info on tackle might be the Australian board on the carp.com forum. I've had lots of success buying carp tackle from the UK and the US, but having rods posted from overseas is expensive. Ebay.co.uk is great when you find a seller who doesn't mind mailing parcels to overseas.

Bought a crappy 15' rod brand new off ebay, $25 delivered, paired it with a Jarvis walker $25 fixed spool reel and could see the eyes on me today as the white pilly headed to the horizon from woody point jetty (just went there to try it out and have no rod holder yet).

Just experimenting to see if it's worth going all european high budget with it. Caught nothing but millions of jelly fish and soft bait/ no elastic didn't help, not sure if any bait actually made it to the bottom but it survived the casting action.

To be continued...

New rod should be arriving from Ted Carter shortly, have caught loads of fat catfish, a black tip reef shark and a couple of shovel nose sharks from Margate Beach using the rubbish cheapo ebay rod (which is in rapid terminal decline), I've been drawing a crowd in daylight hours, there are that many chunky catfish about. I have a shimano speed master IV to go with the Daiwa Theory rod (clean ground) that's en route together with some rig making bit's and bob's. Apparently they ship to Australia daily and last year did a worldwide shipping for 1p! they said it proved extremely popular in Australia and it is going to be repeated at some point this year so keep em peeled!

For the $200 it's cost me I should be in the $500 bracket quality wise but we'll see...
