Dual Citizenship A Barrier ?

Re: Dual Citizenship A Barrier ?
Yes, I've just given them to you.
He is already is a NZ citizen by an automatic action of NZ citizenship law. As GarryP correctly states, registration is merely an administrative process to recognise that fact. This is the same for Canada and the United States. Australia is unusual in that you do not become a citizen by descent until you are registered.
Meanwhile, did Barnaby register?
New Zealand citizenship by descent
The following persons born or adopted outside New Zealand qualify to become New Zealand citizens by descent:
1. those between 1949 and 1977 with a father who is a New Zealand citizen otherwise than by descent at the time of birth or the final adoption order
2. those on or after 1 January 1978 with a parent who is a New Zealand citizen otherwise than by descent at the time of birth or the final adoption order
3. those born on or after 1 January 1978 with a parent who is a New Zealand citizen by descent at the time of birth or the final adoption order who would otherwise be stateless
In order to claim their New Zealand citizenship, these people must register their citizenship by descent at the Citizenship Office.

Fortunately, our legal system doesn't give too much credence to defences such as 'I didn't understand the law', or 'I made a telephone call to someone and what they said proves I haven't broken the law'. If it did, our prisons would be nearly empty.

Duh Duh Duh Duh Duh, another one bites the dust.
Or rather doesn't because it's another National and they have no truck with doing the decent thing and are clinging on desperately ...
Fiona Nash tells Senate she may be British citizen, will not stand aside as deputy Nationals leader - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Leader and deputy leader - both not eligible to stand in the first place.
FFS, audit the lot of them and jail those that won't walk. I think they can be fined too?

Wow ..... I mean .... Wow. How do you think this will end? Someone will find the dirt on those 6 eventually. I am pretty sure lying will go down worse with the electorate than a mistake.

If Wong goes to the court, she has said she has renounced, but hasn't produced evidence. She will be an out and out fibber - I can't imagine she will win a seat as a fibber.

7 Citizenship by descent
(1) Every person born outside New Zealand on or after 1 January 1978 is a New Zealand citizen by descent if, at the time of the person's birth,—
(a) his or her mother or father was a New Zealand citizen otherwise than by descent; or
(b) his or her mother or father was a New Zealand citizen by descent, and the person would otherwise be stateless.
(2) A person who is a New Zealand citizen by virtue of subsection (1) may apply for his or her citizenship status to be registered in accordance with regulations made under this Act.
(3) For the purposes of this section, the Secretary may issue a certificate stating a person's status under this section and, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, a certificate to such effect signed by the Secretary, or by a person authorised for the purpose by the Secretary, shall be sufficient evidence of the matters stated in the certificate.
(4) The citizenship of any New Zealand citizen by descent that has lapsed before the commencement of the Citizenship Amendment Act 2000 is reinstated with effect from the time it lapsed.

Both Ludlam and Waters were terrible and destructive politicians, with hateful, racist and divisive policies and they should have known the rules, but in the case of both of them I think the system is flawed
New Zealand and Canada are not exactly enemies of Australia, so maybe the constitution needs to be changed to reflect this - perhaps open it up to dual citizens of the UK, the old dominions and possibly the US. I would imagine that this would require a referendum though so is a non-starter

However, as I said back at the beginning, the real test needs to be that the prospective MP owes allegiance to their constituents, not to anyone else. And although that would mean distance from a citizenship perspective, it mainly means they cannot be bought and paid for by 'donors'. It would probably also put an end to whips and the blackmail they use to get votes.
All of which has nothing to do with Joyce and co. - and the need to get them out of parliament.
BTW, Xenophon is the latest one with question marks - although that one is complicated.

Well, if you wanted to, you could say "Commonwealth".

Re: Dual Citizenship A Barrier ?
It really is complicated, I've spent some time looking through the laws, what with Cyprus being a colony and laws changing a few times. Personally I think he's going to be found to a dual citizen, but it's a whole other class of complexity to Mr 5-Min-Check Joyce.
