Re: The Cricket Thread
They haven't played the same number of tests in the 4 year cycle - end of story; I repeat 27 vs 35. Before the 2 against Pakistan we'd played 33 and you were 2.
You are putting absolute faith in these rankings and liken batting averages to test rankings for some reason. A person says it is a certain maximum temperature today (which can be proven or otherwise) and Melbourne is the world's most liveable city (which it is according to certain criteria). Batting averages = temperature; test rankings = most liveable city.
SA are deservedly 1 under the system they use, that's true. I'm saying its a fallible system they use.
And still no comment on Smith, just harping on about 1.

It was an an okay system when Aussie were No.1 but a different story now
How bizarre
Still reckon Smith is a journeyman and short term captain
I look at all the great captains that Australia has had and then I see muppets like Ponting (great batsman but a shite captain - a cardboard cutout could have done the same job considering the team that he led) and Smith
Good luck with him. You'll need it!

It's the system they all play to and that system has, rightly, judged SA to be the best

Ah news flash - Smith is filling in for the injured Michael Clarke so at this stage he is a short term captain but he's already shown enough to suggest that when Clarke retires there's a ready replacement. You were also one of the many Warner and Johnson doubters and as you were wrong on that; so history will prove you wrong on Smith - he's over 60 now for 15 tests. Give the guy a break, he's 25 and has another decade of test cricket - we'll see if he's a journeyman at the end of that.
See the old cricket thread re Ponting, I'm not going over that ground again. I guess you'd not agree if I said a cardboard cutout rather than Graeme Smith could have led your team? No, you would argue he was a great leader of men and a brilliant strategist.
