City Versus Regional living
If you had the opportunity to live in a regional town and get paid city rates would you move?
It may seem a easy answer but apparently many have told me they would not.
Example IT Server Engineer
Works in (Melbourne) City income $120k rents small house 1 hour from city by train, unable to buy.
versus
Working in small country town (3 hours from QLD or NSW beachs) where he walks 15 mins or drives 2 mins to work. Same income. Ability to buy a large 4 bed double garage with pool.
What would you do? and if not what are reasons?

Re: City Versus Regional living
I've had a few small tastes of Country living here and hated every second of it thus far.
Country Living......Feels restrictive with smaller cultural bounderies to me. Lack of choice, lack of social diversity, things move slower, every day feels the same.
City Living..... Wider bounderies, lots of change, plenty of diversity, never ending choices, always something happening.
Ergo... I'd put my hand up and state I would definitely rather rent a flat in a city than live in a big house in the Country. Luckily for me I've got a medium to large house very close to a CBD, So I'm 'well appy'.

One thing...... I would possibly take living in a large regional center as long as it was smack bang in the middle of town, over anywhere in outer suburbia.... I hate soulless estates with a passion.

I would give my eye teeth to be able to walk to work in 15 minutes.... For the same job...
Spend 2 hours every work day commuting... Thats if you add in waiting for trains, driving to traino etc etc etc....
And Would prefer to live in a small country town full stop.

Yes otherwise everyone would live in Doha or Dubai.

Nope, I'm with Eddie. Living somewhere close to work in a small city/town would be lovely. If my husband's job didn't depend on his working in a major city then we would very gladly move somewhere smaller. Esperance or over east to the Blue Mountains maybe.

Re: City Versus Regional living
With the projected increase in working population other facilities would be opened ie schools/hospitals. So while mining and IT Industry might be initial cataylst plenty of other regional jobs will become available.
Size will be about the same as Mackay if that is familar with you except Mackay is on the coast. This is about 3 hours to Byron Bay (but don't quote me to the minute). Currently its small enough to be very affordable, but not so small everyone knows you

Well this particular area is about to open some mines. My interest is I am thinking about a new site for my business which would employ about 1000 people. Where as mines can handle fly in fly out, I would be after families and stable workforce.

EG: I noticed some vehemently anti fracking viewpoints coming out of Melbourne recently. That wouldn't go down well anywhere within a days drive of Byron bay for absolute certainty.

Re: City Versus Regional living
Which one? There are alot of businesses setting up in the area:
I also found out they have an airport which is not currently used. But 3 regional airlines are lining up to operate from it. So hey ho 40 minutes to Byron Bay/Coffs Harbour
- Call centre
- Data Centre (IT and Electrical/Plumbers)
- Hospital
- School
- Waste Management
- Energy (Gas) Production
- E-Commerce related

It might be prudent to work out the Socio Economic and Demographics of any area you choose, In case it's ecologically sensitive industry your embarking on.
