Australian Identity. What Is It?

Re: Australian Identity. What Is It?
I must get a photo of our local households xmas lights, with the Muslims and other carloads admiring them in drive-bys in their dozens. Some will even be eating Turkey on Xmas day.... Surprises me how many people cannot and wont believe this. The busiest butchers in Coburg for Turkeys are the Halal places.

Postie hands me a parcel "It's from Australia, might be a Christmas present!'
Me 'It is, it's from my sister, hopefully it's one of her famous Christmas cakes'
Postie 'I don't get many Christmas presents (laughs), save a bit for me'
Walking back down the path he turned back and said 'Merry Christmas!'
He's a lovely man, a bit nosy but still lovely

A conversation between my Muslim postie and I this morning

Apparently Tescos in the UK got a lot of hate for pointing out that Muslims in their 1000's eat Turkey and partake in recognising Xmas on Xmas day.

Funnily enough, the main organizer behind arranging gifts for clients, as well as staff Christmas celebrations, where my partner works, is a Malay Muslim. (dresses traditional)
My partner will be delivering presents to families today, probably close to half Muslim. Who ever labours under the misbelieve that Muslims don't celebrate the festive season in various ways, needs to open their mind and eyes a little.
The haters will hate regardless of the facts. Great to celebrate our differences as a positive feature of living in Australia in 2017.

Re: Australian Identity. What Is It?
My take on Turnbull's speech regarding Australian identity being multi cultural, if being true, would mean we celebrate Eid and Chinese New Year and Depvali as public holidays ....then there may be some truth in what he suggested.

Very sad, the apparent growth of moronic behaviour in UK. A country once well respected for its tolerance and acceptance of difference.
Signs of a decaying society turning in on itself? Be that against Muslims, Foreigners in general or Brexit.
A country of hate filled tabloids/social media stirring up elements of dissent within the mass?
Whatever hardly fun times to be in UK.

All depends on the eye of the beholder. But I would suggest it is above politics or anything that be altered/ scraped by the means of a pen or vote.

I think what you mean to say is why should we get a public holiday for Christmas and not the others?
Well until the proportions start equalizing, then democracy is still the winner.

Similar joke about Belgians.....But Yes I know very true in Malaysia's case. One of the few truly multi cultural countries that recognise difference in society.

You can celebrate them if you want. Nothing is stopping you.

Just furthers my argument that Australia has a way to go before reclassifying itself as a multicultural country. Ethnic Chinese now make up about a million in the country. Easy to kick start the process by establishing a day's holiday in recognition of Chinese New Year.
Malaysia is far removed from a perfect example of a democratic nation by the way. But they do celebrate all religious holidays and allow primary education in minority language .......
