Default $1000 GST cut off from U.S.....

Hi there, just wondering if the $1000 cut off includes shipping costs?

Looking at getting some tyres (or tires as they say over there) shipped. They will come to just under 1000aud but with shipping costs will be prob 1250 - will i be stung for the gst or is the shipping cost not counted in the 1000aud limit?

Thanks, Stu

It excludes shipping costs.

I just bought some windscreen wipers for my Navara:
$70 at a Nissan Dealer
$27 from the UK via ebay

The site is www.tirerack.com - prices are pretty good, plenty of people i know off a car site have used them to ship to aus. The tyres i have on now - OEM bridgestones are 500-600 aud over here (each!). From that site you can get the same for 200USD each or even less. You have to email them with your exact address and quantity for an accurate shipping quote but it's around 250USD for 4 tyres to QLD i believe...

In my experience they do make allowances for shipping costs. The customs site however makes it clear that any duty is calculated to include postage & packing. It certainly hasn't happened to me, though others have been stung.
See the list on the following page, it shows a $150 cost for Postage included as dutiable

It's effectively taxable on the value of the goods when they land in Australia.

Here's a customs leaflet that just confirms the link Sean has put up.

Hi guys!

Since the discussion is going on about ebay and import, I'd like to ask completely irrelevant question.

I'm after my Toshiba Satellite Laptop keyboard which is brand new and will be shipped from Hongkong and will costs me US $15 and the shipping is free to Australia.

My question is:
1. Will I be charged any duty or taxes from Australian customs?
2. The currency seller requires is US dollar and me being a first time buyer on ebay don't know if I could purchase it with my Australia Paypal account. If yes, then how?

Appreciate your feedback.

There is a $1000 import threshold - so i would say it's pretty clear that a $15 keyboard fom hongkong isn't gonna cause you any issues

thanks for the advice everyone else

And my second question which was asked earlier too was:

Apologies for asking lame question but I just need a little idea what's going on. Never purchased anything, so any guidance will be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance.
