The town where families rely on food hand-outs

The town where families rely on food hand-outs
It's not in the north either. Please any folk who are returning to the UK, choose your area wisely. I've no idea if other areas are like this (so far it doesn't seem so bad in London, although a lot of public sector workers are going to lose their jobs), but according to the report, this place in Devon is really up against it.

A charity which sends food parcels to impoverished Eastern Europe has had to redirect some of its aid nearer home – to the South West of England.
More than 200 people a week are picking up ‘basic foodstuffs’ such as cereals and tinned goods from a help centre at a Baptist church in Okehampton, Devon.
The crisis arose after the closure of three factories, leaving 350 workers redundant.

It's happening the world over.
While in N.Z I worked for "Mangere Budgeting Services" where, for the past 20 years they have been handing out food parcels weekly to the less well off....... and let me say, they had nothing, and it opened my eyes.

To be fair, it did say in that article that people were only getting food parcels until their benefit payment applications were being processed..................

I have a friend that works at soup kitchens in the USA and I was shocked to hear stories from him about people that had absolutely nothing to eat and were relying on handouts from charities like churches, I honestly do not think it is that bad in the UK..........

Any time one of these stories is in the Daily Mail, I look for another source before believing it.

There are food banks all over the UK. I think they do a great service for poor people.

Which is fine (and I wonder why someone who's been in work solidly for years hasn't got enough money put by to last a couple of months). However I've posted this for expats returning home, who may find themselves without any benefits (or it takes a long long time before they get through all the red tape). Please choose your destination carefully - it seems that some places are getting hit a lot harder than others.

The title of your thread strongly suggests that families are relying on charitable food hand-outs to survive at all, and is obviously going for shock value.

Same here in Australia. Been a sharp increase in food handouts. I work for a local charity and I have also noticed a big increase in phone calls to our financial counsellors in the past few week.
Happening world over, not just the UK.

Of course money is not the only issue, and people may choose to make the move regardless. I suspect though we need a kind of jobs locator, so people can judge the better places to move back to.
