Dave,
Just a suggestion, but when you've finished Uni, why not move to a different part of the country, its maybe just the place your living in that's bringing you down. You've got plenty of time to sort out where, do some research, spend a little time in a few different places to get the feel of the place, and go for it.

I'm actually off to Amsterdam in a few hours. Maybe a few of their special cakes will calm me down a bit

Listen to me carefully, moron as I dont like repeating myself. I lived in the UK for 24 years, moved to the USA and experienced life over there for 2 years and have now been back in the UK for a year. If that's not the way to come to a balanced, objective opinion then I don't know what is. Sometimes the truth hurts; but at least you always have the option of burying your head in the sand and pretending that the UK is still a great place to live. If you think you know me from a few posts that you don't like, then think again. Don't ever patronise me you bloody prick!
P.S Newsflash: You didn't rattle any cages by critisizing the UK. Swearing and name calling usually do it. And this is you being happy???? Wow.

This forum makes me laugh, all the homesick vultures who haven't lived in the UK for years are waiting for their prey. In this case a bloke who gives *his* honest opinion on what *he* dislikes about his first year back and you are all blaming it on his mental state.
But it's OK to send Karma to Flea when only after her first few hours back in the UK she starts a post about how great Britain is.
You lot only read what you want to hear, any negative stuff you brush off and give the same excuse, "it happens in America as well you know" usually followed by a link to a local newspaper in your town reporting on a crime.

I think he is getting better treatment here than we would in those forums.

What an interesting thread - I agree with some of the sentiments that there are some that just don't want to hear any 'bad news' about the UK regardless of whether it's media tripe or indeed fact - I must admit I have been guilty in the past of 'jumping' on anyone who slags the UK off - but the truth is, of course, the UK has got it's problems, just as Australia/Canada/US has it's problems.
I guess my best advice would be (if I'm trying to be really honest and balanced) is despite the problems here I still honestly feel the UK is a great place to live - and IMO preferable to Australia. I would never return to Oz to live. But of course it is such a personal thing - no-one is right and wrong - there is no perfect place that will please everyone - so although it is good to read the MBTTUK to get a bit of perspective I guess all you will find on here is personal preceptions rather than fact.
I think if you are moving back to the UK because you love it and miss it despite all it's problems (like I did) then you won't go far wrong. If you are moving back purely for family then maybe it is more likely you won't settle back here?
Whatever you do - good luck and be happy!

Wish I was coming with you....call in at the Windmill and have a drink on me.....I think wereever you live it is a state of mind.....each country has plus points and negative points...but deep down you have to make the best of what you have got....I still live in the UK and yes I get upset by what goes on especially in my home town which in the last year has been in the national eye more than any other town.....boasting teachers who refuse to take off their traditional religous head wear....more suicide bombers than any ohter town in the UK....A boy bieng beaten to death in the local park in broad daylight and the icing on the cake....A chav mother who has been neglecting her daughter the said daughter who got kidnapped by her mothers lovers uncle and held her captive for 24 days while her mothers lover trawled the internet for pornographic images of children....you couldn't make it up....but still this country is great for me...for the moment
