I am asking because I am doing a uni assignment on the misuse of the humble apostrophe and I am led to believe that the signage at St. James' Park station is contradictory all over the place. I've heard that they have St James' Park, St James Park and the rest are St James's Park!

Can anybody verify what you have noticed about the signage at this station?

cheers
Take a look at the railway station in King's Lynn, Norfolk. The signage writes it Kings Lynn.

The town of Lynn is a possessive of the King and so it is properly King's Lynn.

Prior to Henry VIII dissolving the monasteries it was known as Bishop's Lynn.

There seem to be many wealthy bishops scattered all over England......now we know whare all those church collections ended up........in Shropshire (Bishop's Castle).....in Dorset (Bishop's Caundle)....in Gloucestershire (Bishop's Cleeve).....in Herefordshire (Bishop's Frome).....in Surrey (Bishop's Gate)....in Essex (Bishop's Green)....in Somerset (Bishop's Hull)....in Warwickshire (Bishop's Itchington)....again in Somerset (Bishop's Lydeard)....and again in Gloucestershire (Bishop's Norton)....in Devon (Bishop's Nympton)...in Staffordshire (Bishop's Offley)....in Hertfordshire (Bishop's Stortford)...in Hampshire (Bishop's Sutton)....Warwickshire again (Bishop's Tachbrook)...down in glorious Devon again (Bishop's Tawton)....once more in Hampshire (Bishop's Waltham)...and finally it's Staffordshire again (Bishop's Wood).

Aside from all these affluent Bishops' possessions all over the place, England is littered with actual Bishops themselves....all with the title Bishop, followed by their last name.....Auckland (Co Durham) ... Burton (East Yorkshire)..... Kinkell (ooops.....this one is a Scottish bishop back home in Bonnie Scotland....in Highland region).....Middleham (Co Durham).....Monkton (North Yorkshire)...Norton (Lincolnshire)......Sutton (Somerset)...Thornton (North Yorkshire again)....and finally this Bishop in East Yorkshire.......Wilton.

There is actually one place in England which has an exclamation mark (!) as part of its official title, and it must always be quoted if you wish to avoid offending the people who live in the wee seaside willage on the coast of North Devon.......Westward Ho! Charles Kingsley adored the place.
