no house to sell?
hi as a family of 4 we have been toying with the idea of relocating to australia for some years, the main decision factor for us has always been that we will have no equity - we rent in the UK
has anyone had experience of this? and emigrated to australia successfully or can give us advice?
I am a nurse and so will find work - currently in demand but the thought of going with literally a few months wages scares me with a family to provide for.
Not started the process as yet!

Well we moved and let our house out, so we had no house equity available to invest. Then again we did move back last year.
You do need savings for the move, because migration is expensive. But if you rent in UK, I can't see that you would be any better or worse off by having to rent in Australia either. I probably wouldn't recommend a move to Sydney though. If you are both in occupations that allow you to work anywhere, I would recommend a move to one of the cheaper cities like Adelaide or Brisbane.

I wouldn't be so sure about this. Have a look at various threads about how hard it is for nurses to find work these days.

OP -be prepared for a few weeks wait before you get any income, the jobs are out there but they are a lot harder to come by than they used to be.
As for the rental question, thousands of people in Aus can't afford to buy, including many migrants. We arrive as renters and stay that way.

Here in WA the state government are making one in twelve health staff redundant. So, don't assume finding a job will be easy.

I also immigrated to Aus with no house but I did have enough savings to last a few months in the event I couldn't find work. I did come at the height of the mining boom so was able to secure work quickly. Not sure if I would do it again under the current climate.
Second what people were saying about nursing jobs. One way to spread the risk is to send out one person first to try and secure work and accommodation before the whole family moves over. Good luck.

WA, Qld, Australia, UK, USA - everywhere really, has too many civil servants costing the taxpayer far too much

Really? Too many nurses?. Too many cleaners keeping your hospitals clean? Too many booking clerks making sure your heart surgery is booked?

Too much red tape
Too much welfare
Everywhere
Too much tax to pay for them/it all
Everywhere
We are not getting enough value for our tax dollars

I know I said this before, but it would be nice if you actually spared a thought for the individuals involved. There is nothing to celebrate when people are losing their jobs through no fault of their own, whether tbey are public or private sector. Seeing someone rejoicing when other people's lives are in ruins lives a sour taste in the mouth.

I pay for this. I'll have an opinion about it
Answer me some questions:
What's Queensland's deficit and total state debt?
Since the CFMEU puppet that masquerades as your state premier was put into power, how many civil servants has she recruited?

Yes, this was announced a month or so ago.
The state government are broke. Though I expect with changes to federal funding for health it will play out in other states as well.

Don't worry about equity, the rent to salary ratio is pretty much the same as UK. You will need cold hard cash though - I would suggest about £15k-20k - this would last you for a 3-4 months, plus rental deposit, cheap furniture, a car etc.
It is hard to rent a place unless you have a job - so you need one before you get there, unless you have a place to stay or 6 months rent to pay upfront.
It is very expensive moving country. I think the idea of sending out one person to get a job, is much better. I did that moving back to the UK.
I tell you now, the grass is not greener in Oz. You won't necessarily be better off or have more money. Everyone looks at it with rose-tinted glasses. Some take the new lifestyle to it like a duck to water, others never do.
I did have equity in UK, but sold it to buy in Oz, and after selling my place in Oz- I don't have enough equity to buy ANYTHING in UK, and even if I did, I have no credit rating! So now I am totally worse off, but at least I am back home and resigned to renting forever. I would prefer renting in UK to owning a house in Oz and having to live there again.
