we have had the retaining wall built. its not finished yet but its getting there. the front needs to be cut then the fence will sit on top of the wall. we still need more fill at the front of the house which we will get when we dig the pool out.

ive only ever seen polished concrete on top stuff and it looks fantastic. my only reservation is how long it will last. dont want to be negative but ive never seen concrete yet that doesnt crack. so it will look fantastic for a few months or even years but eventually i think you will end up with hair line cracks everywhere which i think will destroy the look.it is also expensive to do i believe. we are going for a polished porcelain (600x300 laid at 1/3 to each other) in the interior with with same unpolished tile on the patio and in the pool bathroom. these are costing $50 a metre (probably around $30 a metre anywhere else in oz) and probably $35 a metre to lay including grouting and adhesive. there goes another $30,000.
Concrete cracks: period.
It looks great until the cracks appear, then it just looks third world. We saw a new house when we were researching our window problems: hundreds of linear metres of cracking and a big lawsuit to boot.
Oh - and slippery as hell: I went a**e over t*t on a wet patch and was very lucky not to have broken my head.

well the retaining wall is nearly complete. i just need to cut the blocks at the front to the desired angle and put the fence on top and its done. so after 13m3 of concrete, 630 blocks, a lot of steel and all the other bit and pieces its cost about $10000 ish. if it looks a little high the final ground level will be 200mm higher than what it is now so there will be about 100mm of block above the ground which will prevent any water run off onto the block below. this block work will be hidden by the gardens and mulch. we still need to get fill into the front of the land to build it up and forward to be level with wall.

at 8.51am this morning the title on the land was issued. its only 5 months later than we were told
. in 21 days we will actually own the land and can progress building. unfortunately we go on holiday in 19 days time and return mid june. im going to make some calls tomorrow and see if its possible to get the slab down before we go on our holidays but cairns is in the grip of a concrete shortage at the moment so may not be possible. being in for christmas is now back on the cards even if we start in june so watch this space.

so let it begin.youngys house build has officially started.the house has been marked out and the plumber has been today to start marking out. the slab will be ready for concrete by the end of next week. ( hopefully we can get some).
