Where to go
Hello all,
This is my first post on the forum, so please be gentle with me.
I have passed my TRA and have submitted my visa paperwork, I am a plumber and will hopefully be going to Aus soon.
However, I have no idea where to live, or where will be best for work, I will be a self employed plumber so I don't suppose getting work will be too much of a problem.
I am aiming to buy a house for cash, but I don't have a fortune to spend. I have £90,000 cash and I understand that I am unable to obtain a mortgage for a while so this will have to do. If I was able to obtain a mortgage I would go down this road and buy something better.
I also have a large family, 8 kids and the misses, (I know, buy a tv), so, I need a large house.
Does anybody have any ideas where would be a good child friendly place, that is reasonably priced and fairly populated for work?
See, I don't want the earth!
Cheers
Mike

$AUD220K? Unlikely to find a house big enough for all of you at that price. And, be warned that when you first arrive and are looking for somewhere to rent, the rental agreement/lease is likely to specify the max number of people living in a place. ie a 4 BR house - 5 people max for example.
Hmmmm thinking of places...do u want coastal? Maybe Warnambool, vic. Lakes Entrance, vic......

Re: Where to go
To help decide where to go think about the climate you want to be in as it varies accross the country ie melbourn is a more temperate climate while Brisbane is sub-tropical and there are even Ski seasons in some areas.
Once you know the climate you want research the different areas/cities with these climates to help you narrow down where you want to live.

the kids would have to share rooms. With 8 kids make sure you get child support payments from centrelink. Warrnambool and Lakes entrace are nice quite coastal areas in rural victoria, great beaches and scenery , cold in winter but great in summer.

You shouldnt find it too difficult to get a mortagage after say 3 months.
My advise would be to rent for a year - after which time you are in a better situation to budget for how much you wish to borrow. You will also have a better idea of where you want to live.
Have a look on seek.com for work (income) and domain for rental/house prices.
Rental over here includes rates/council tax. and there is no tv license fee.

Re: Where to go
Welcome
Where to go - like others have said, researching different areas is your best bet, especially house prices and whats available that will suit your needs at the price you can afford. The links people have already given you will be a great help. Schools are obviously an important issue so once you have decided on where to try, people on here will be able to give you more advice.
Getting started in Australia, wherever you end up, is the most important thing, especially with a family. Whether you stay there for years and years is up to you. Dont worry too much abt where you first live, there are so many oppurtunities in other areas once you have established a good 'working profile' over here. Australia is such a huge country, its a good thing to move about a bit and see different places not just stay put in the same place for ever and a day! You really have to see the 'bigger picture' - your lifes will change dramatically - there is so much open to you here especially in your line of work because there is a massive shortage here just like in the UK!
Once you are here, your mind opens even more to changes, obvious really as you would have already made one of/if not the biggest in your lifes!
We have been here 20 months and are aware of friends and people we have met that have moved states re jobs, family whatever, also many people we talk to in our jobs have moved to Cairns from different states and have lived in many others before - its seems to be the done thing in beautiful Australia! Try somewhere, if you dont like it, move around - too easy m8! (said with an ozzie accent)
Anyway, good luck in your quest for a new life.
