Re: What is a Nursery Nurse in Australia?
Just need some advice, we are in process of applying and i was wondering about work possibilities for my OH, She has her NNEB and been qualified since 2000, so 7 years experience covering different roles nursery nurse, senior nursery nurse, room leader and has been an assistant manager of a day nursery for 18 months. Any ideas of what kind of salary could be on offer and what job roles she could be looking for, also what about skills testing.

I'm only asking this because if you do have a skill to get in with you may as well just use that, and not mention the OH's childcare experience as it makes no difference apart from more work for you.
To get a skills assessment for a Child care coordinator MODL you need 3 yrs senior experience (including managerial experience).
It would be easier to just get your OH's certificates assessed by the Qld department when you get there and then she can work as a group leader as her qualification is in the '2 yr overseas approved qualifications' check below

Re: What is a Nursery Nurse in Australia?
Very interesting topic, Im a registered childminder doing my Foundation Degree in early years and education and Id never have thought about becoming a childminder in Australia and it seems like they pay more and respect childminders more in OZ.
One thing that bothers me a bit is the fact I would probably have to work in a nursery for the first 6 months because I wouldnt have the funds to start straight away, but very interesting though.

I got my BA honours degree funded by our local city early years department.
I only finished it late last year. I feel a bit of a traitor...they supported me (paid for cover for school while i studied!) and paid my uni fees and i'm buzzing off to the other side of the world with it...oh well....i'm sure i'll get over it

Are you planning on emigrating with her skill then or do you have one?

Re: What is a Nursery Nurse in Australia?
I've just replied to the other thread about NNEB.
please note that it is worth any NNEB asking CACHE UK to state your qualification is dip level 3 and a copy of the syllabus to take with you. It will all help to prove your level to OZ qualification authorities.

Re: What is a Nursery Nurse in Australia?
Only just seen this thread but this is my experience so far.
Came out here in march. Have BA Hons Primary Teaching which I knew I couldn't use (looking into that in next week or so) Have my NNEB from 20yrs ago...yes am that old!
Sent for transcript of NNEB and letter to explain its now NVQ or whatever! Needless to say for pre 1989 qual. nothing exists, even had letter saying qualification useless now! (pre 1989)
While waiting for transcript looked up department of communities qld. It lists overseas qualifications that are equal to oz ones and there on page 4 is NNEB uk equivilent to group leader in oz.
Printed this off, sent this and transcript to oz assesment centre. it came back...we cannot assess your qualification, look on department of communities website, which we see you have done, so therefore you may work as a group leader!!
While I was waiting WEEKS for all this, and money was fast disappearing, I took copies of NNEB cert and info from Dept of Communities website and applied for 2 full time jobs. Worked in both for a day...hated one, couldnt leave fast enough at end of day! The other one was great but I soon realised Im here on my own, was having trouble finding a rental and all that would entail once found re collecting shipping, renting fridge, washing machine etc and no one delivering at weekends.
Gave up idea of full time job. Left number at several childcare centres and have worked as a relief/supply more or less everyday since! I stick to 3 centres, have got to know adults and children well and know I could probably work full time in one but need a break from other two now and then! Having never worked in childcare centres in uk I had no idea how bitchy it can be so nice to have a feel of a few places and take or leave them.
Also didn't know how different they can be from great to downright disgusting!
The pay varies but if i work a day or 2 in a new centre i now ask how much they pay. Its varied from $24per hour to $28. one place paid $18 til i did my British thing and said I really dont think so, I wouldn't get out of bed for that!! they put extra money in bank the following week!
Centres are crying out for full/part time or relief workers
Good Luck...oh, I'm living on the gold coast too if anyone wants to meet up? Old in body, not in mind!!

Re: What is a Nursery Nurse in Australia?
You have had more had more luck than me. (I am in NZ) All nurseries here now advertise for people with a degree in early childhood yrs (as a ruling from govenment to have all degree qualified staff by 2012)- my NNEB is of no use.
I have just managed to secure a job as a teachers aide working with a child with Downs syndrome in year one of a primary school. The fact that I was a SENCO in my last nursery in uk and I have a diploma in specific learning difficulties (dyslexia) helped. There were 15+ applicants including internal staff so I was lucky to get the job. I earn NZ$13 an hour and I'm taxed from the first pay packet .
Upside : I enjoy the job and the staff and children are lovely

Hi,
really interested in your post many thanks, I am also NNEB trained approx 20 years ago (and just waiting to recieve my certificate for a foundation degree), though i have got a transcript from cashe,
I aim to be in the gold coast sept, did you go directly to the centres to get casual work or is there an agency you join.
Do you have to pay to get your qualification assessed by queensland communities as wondering if I should try and get that done now before we leave as i will ned to work quickly.
Any other advice for us older NNEB's gratefully recieved. Hope all is going well,
Claire
