We were given a 'furniture hire pack' from PABS: http://www.pabs.com.au/ Luckily the OH's employer paid for them, but they were very good and gave us everything from towels, to beds to teaspoons! Would highly recommend them!

Like others we have been sleeping on inflatable beds and sitting on garden furniture. By the time our container arrives, we will have been doing this for 4.5 VERY long months !
That's what you get for only shipping half a container and doing it right before Christmas.
It's going to feel like Christmas when the stuff arrives at the end of this month - I am counting the days.

The other place where you can source inexpensive (or free) furniture etc is the Gumtree website.

There are several companies that will hire out furniture and many agents can put you onto them - as someone said previously, you can hire everything including cutlery, or just pick and choose what you need.

we only moved from New Zealand to Melbourne, was a bit of a nightmare in New Zealand, was already to move but my visa took forever to come though. We lived for about a month with all of our stuff packed for shipping. The shipping company were awsome though, they said we could open some of the boxes and delayed transit until the visa came through. Was horrible living in our old house in winter New Zealand with all of our stuff in boxes and bubble wrap. We really noticed how bad it was not being able to have all the kitchen stuff you rely on.
We then went down to South Island NZ to visit my kiwi partners family (approx 2 months, felt way longer than 2 months). When we flew out to Melbourne we stayed with friends for a week and since they lived 1 hour 45 mins away from the city and i started work the next week we decided to buy a camp bed and 'camp' in the rental we found the middle of the week before. Wasnt too bad, luckily we heard from the shipping company that our stuff would be delivered on the Monday, my first day at work. Was great when I got home from work and found all of our stuff in the new place. Its amazing how much you miss your own stuff around you.
Next time I think we will plan better and maybe stay in a serviced apartment until we find a decent place, could have our stuff sent to a storage company. Although the place we found to live was ok, we did have a leak in the spare room, at one stage we had no lighting in the entire flat since the water kept flipping the fuse box switch. Then we had water filling up the ceiling light shades, then a massive crack down the ceiling and then the bathroom flooded every time it rained. The first time it happened I thought someone had broken in to take a bath and made a mess everywhere. One morning needed to use the loo I ended up putting a towl on the floor cos it was wet and using an umbrella cos the rain was pouring in through the strange window vent thingy thay had. This was a posh unit with a rent of 440 per week.

Get yourself an old tea crate to sit on, a sharp knife and a big stick, and get 'whittlin' . . . the time will literally fly by!

We sent everything over a month or so before we left and borrowed from friends and family in the UK. Once here, as soon as we found a property our stuff arrived and we moved in the same day the container was delivered.

We moved into an empty 4 bed brand new rental when we arrived in Aus. We bought a cheap TV that we sat on the box, a couple of camp chairs, a blow up queen size air bed + bedding and some cheap kitchen stuff from Ikea. We tried to manage without a fridge using the sink filled with ice! but ended up buying a cheap fridge which became a beer fridge when our own upright finally arrived. Its amazing how little you can manage with.
