Don't take this the wrong way but I have heard of kiwis referred to as Pacific Poms,
but we get on pretty well I would say. Rob Edwards www.australianaustralia.com "BH" <[email protected]> wrote in message news:[email protected]... > Friendly, but that NZ accent makes our ears bleed. |

However, I suspect you will find unkind words from individuals on both sides and even some nasty stories from the press trying to stir up bad feeling. Ange |

I imagine it sounds similar to what a South African would sound like to a Pom.

Re: what do ozzies think of kiwis
The jokes by Aussies about Kiwis and their love of sheep is probably overdone
somewhat.......but they can take it.......the kiwi accent has a little "twang" to it......six sounds like sex for instance.probably a little closer to Sth African. Good question Despite all my years living in NZ, I still made mistakes from time to time. I found it is easier to spot an Australian in NZ than it is to spot a kiwi in Australia. Outside Australasia I was correct pretty much 90% of the time. A few hints for those of you wanting to avoid the 'Im actually from New Zealand' statement when you misinterpret the nationality. New Zealanders tend to say 'eh' at the end of their sentences. This is more prominent amoung people from the North Island and Maori people. It is less noticeable in the South Island. They also tend to go up at the end of their sentences. (An annoying habit I have retained). The classic 'fush & chips', 'sex' for six do apply but are not as obvious as one might think. The New Zealand accent is less naesel than the Australian accent. The only real noticiable regional accent is that of people from Southland, who tend to roll their R's (Scottish influnce). People from Auckland have probably the closest to an Australian accent there is. I have often made mistakes with people from this region, which is difficult as alot of New Zealanders live in Auckland. Hope this helps. Ashley Watson |

And I've just realised that I don't know what jokes Kiwis tell about aussies..... can someone help me out? I do however get sympathy (occasionally!) in Australia, when admitting that I'm married to one - and what's worse, he's a KiwiPom - born in NZ and raised in England, and now a recent Australian citizen. Only really a problem when the rugby is on. LJ |
