Default Welder/Fabricator opportunites

I have a PEO Level 2 and a Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Technology. Both specialising in welding and fabrication.

Having looked online at the skilled occupations list there is a few on there which I would fall in to:

Sheetmetal Trades Worker
Metal Fabricator
Pressure Welder
Welder (First Class)
Fitter (General)
Fitter and Turner
Fitter-Welder
Metal Machinist (First Class)

Realistically what are the career opportunities within this field in Australia?

Welcome to B.E.! From what I see (and I am sorry if I am wrong), but these are both 'entry level' qualifications from tec college or whatever they call it these days.

For sure there is demand for these jobs, but its often a very up and down demand, depending on what the mines are doing.

As these are quite new style qualifications, I am guessing that you might be quite young. Would a working holiday visa be an easier/better option for you. It would allow you to see the country and find out more about the work situation without making the full commitment yet.

Thanks for the reply.

I am 26. My plan is to wait for a year while me and my partner save up, plus I can carry on with college for a year and get some more experience. Then get a year working visa like you have suggested.

Do you think I would benefit from doing the Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Technology (Fab/weld)? This is a 2 year course but I could wait the extra year if it would help me get a better position in Aus

You are going on a WHV, your options will be limited by that anyway. If you are just planning to use the WHV in the way it is intended, you might be better off just doing casual, bar work etc. as there can be quite a lot of hoops for trades to jump through and you have to weigh up is it worth doing on your long holiday.
