What a beauty! Thanks for the pic, you've made my day!

As for your original post - don't you just hate it when the Aussies get like that? I work with many people who don't seem to have any problem understanding me and the many other expats who share the same office, but then you have one or two idiots who seem to find it the greatest fun to make the biggest bloody issue over every single word you pronounce differently. What really, really gets me is if they start laughing in your face at you because of pronouncing something like maroon correctly. The whole lot of them have a speech impediment called "Australian English" and they laugh at me!?

Feed 'em British Curries - same effect - less trouble.

Mind you, you might never recover from running around with a bottle of cyenne pepper sprinking poo
Thanks G'Day,I will give it a go

I am struggling a bit with this. You sprinkle the poo with cayenne pepper and the dog does not like it - hence aversion therapy. Am I missing something? If I were given a choice of a plate of poo or a plate of cayenne pepper - I think I would find the poo would be causing the aversion, not the pepper.

Cheers,

DagBoy

I don't know what it is, but you're right; its just one or two that need their ears syringing.

A few years ago went camping with some friends north of Sydney. One of of the guys we were with (who happens to be from the town as me) had forgotten some vital camping equipment so went into the local outdoor goods shop and asked if they sold tent pegs. The guy behind the counter had a puzzled look on his face and eventually replied "we don't sell Tampax, you need the pharmacist down the street". It sounds made up but its absolutely true, I was there.

Actually this bloke, Jonny his name was, was a terrible mutterer and mumbler; most people couldn't understand him, regardless of where they were from. In fact he had a German girlfriend who acted as his interpreter.

Harley is our first Golden retriever & to be honest he's dam hard work! but i wont give up on him,I'm just frustrated by peoples attitude over this problem as if its no big deal,to me it is & i certainly dont want Harley licking our kids or anybody Else's faces, hands etc...& how anybody can say encourage your dog to eat it is beyond me

G'day Madsad

Dealing with the poo eating! Mungo is 3 now and has outgrown it we hope, haven't seen him do it for ages. I think we cured it by continually saying: "Oh Mungo! That's disgusting!" It wore him down in the end, this dog has a real sense of shame when he does something he knows he shouldn't do.

If he's begging (which we'll never cure) and I say Oh Mungo! then his ears go down and his head drops and he looks even more hang-dog than usual. The only problem is he has a memory like a gold fish and within a moment he back begging.

But we hope the turd eating days are behind us if that's not got a bit of a pun in there.

Good luck with your unsavoury dog behaviour

Donna I feel you are being a bit harsh here - you asked for help and many of us offered sensible replies - you never indicated that you had trained dogs before and were asking for help - as with most behavioural problems - it comes down to basics training wise - was not trying to be patronising with you. Your original post alarmed me because you indicated you might be giving the dog away - that always upsets me cause i'd call in a specialist 1st if I could. It is an awful problem but a common one - just persevere and i'm sure you will suceed in breaking the habit. Did not intend to offend only help.

Hi Lynn,

Any dog loving owner knows 'Basic training step's i have not came on here & shouted OH my dog eats his own poo what am i going to do? Harley started doing this from the day we got him,so basic training started from day one to discourage him from doing so,Ive consulted vets, contacted breeders, training specialists & been in & out of pet shops for feedback & too be honest i am frustrated by their attitude over this problem, replies like OH he,ll grow out of it'thats what dogs do,he,s not getting enough attention,he,s lonely,he,s bored, not getting enough vitamins feed him pineapple,Vegemite, kelp aaaarrgghh
I pay $152 a month for specialist dry dog food & people are telling me he,s not getting enough vitamins!!! he gets the proper amount of food for his age & weight,i can give him a bowl of food, take him out for the toilet & he will still eat a pile of poo within minutes of being fed.
We got Harley de-sexed last month, main reason being he kept jumping/trying to mount the kids(again this had been since he was a few months old) i am also hoping it may help in some way with his training.
Believe me i am trying what i can to stop him eating his own poo but at the end of the day my children's health & well being comes first & foremost over any animal,my kids adore their dog & he adores playing with them, dogs lick, bite & chew, kids then put their hands in their mouth & don't give it a second thought,(my youngest is 4)
I'm at the stage at the moment i cant let the kids play with the dog without me being there to constantly tell the kids not to let the dog lick them & to watch Harley doesn't eat his poo.
If this behaviour does continue, yes Harley will have to go but not without me trying 100% to stop the problem,he is a pup & we have a long way to go before we go down that road.

Donna I just made a phone call for you, we have one dog thats got incredibly bad behaviour, and put him in obedience school, some of the trainers are real doggy people you know live and breath dogs but one lady is so helpful shes a vet and a trainer. She reckons a 6 month lab is probably at its worst stages of behaviour but a great time for you to sort out this prob, because pups will usually poo after eating, so feed him inside or where you can see, 5 mins later let him out to where you have trained him to poo, 99% guarantee she reckons he will go, you cover the poo in the pepper, shop bought preperation or her suggestion freshly chopped parsley which dogs are supposed to hate, give him a few mins to sink in you cant eat this shit (no pun ) then remove. Message will sink in.

For the shagging, do you have one of those council run dog parks, fenced areas supplied by the local council where dogs can go off leash get together with 20 odd other dogs, run like crazy, and get their natural urges over with, works a treat for our sex crazed mutt.
