do you know of anyone who has moved to oz after GCSE and taken the VCE course? I wonder how much of it would be on the same level as GCSE and how much would be A level equivalent?

No I don't know anyone personally who has done this but there must be someone on BE's who has moved to Vic (or another state) with children of Year 11 or Year 12 age. We'll just have to wait until someone comes along!
I've compared the syllabii in some subjects (Business Management, Accounting and Geography) and this tells me that VCE is more akin to Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers than Standard Grades so in an England and Wales context I should think that VCE is closer to A levels than GCSE.

I emailed a friend with teenagers in Brighton (Melb.) a few days ago about VCE and their local schools but they haven't replied.

In answer to your question, as in the UK, you will find a mixture of good and not so good government schools in Melbourne! It depends largely on which suburb you live in and as a very, very, rough rule of thumb, there will be a link between between property values and quality of schools. Private schools cater for a higher proportion of pupils than in the UK because they are more affordable - see ABC's thread on private vs state schools.
As a suggestion, yourself or Helen could start a thread 'anyone else with teenage children?' or something like that to attract more replies to your questions about education, changing from GCSE etc. Try also the search box in this forum and the Immigration one which usually comes up with something relevant. Good luck!
