Re: uk nurse to australia
Hi all,
I currently work for the North West Ambulance Service. I'm not a Paramedic unfortunately. I am in between Patient Transport and a Paramedic. I do work on the Emergency frontline ambulances and am blue light trained, have been in this role for 2 and a half years, although in the service for 6 years altogether.
Im not getting anywhere with St Johns Abulance in Perth as my role is not recognised by them. I have applied and re-applied around 12 times since returning from visiting my brother in Perth in August last year.
My background prior to The ambulance service is in healthcare. I was a HCA (Health Care Assistant) on a Vascular ward, caring for mostly diabetic amputees, and i loved it. I have an NVQ2 in Health and Social Care.
I am DESPERATE to come and live in Perth!. I have been trying for SO long now, its driving me nuts!
Ive read on the previous posts by some of the nurses that theyre missing auxilliaries.........does that mean they dont have HCA's in Oz?? If they do.....does anyone have any advice on how to go about applying for a position with anyone over there?? I have been to various Expo's over the years, but theyre only looking for qualified nurses. Thanks, Ann.

I have been here for 5 yrs now, work in emergency. There are some differences, firstly there are no health care assistants. In Vic we have nurse to patient ratios, so on a ward day ratios are 1 nurse to 4 patients, at night 1:8. No assistants so you have to grab another nurse to help you with heavy patients.
I think it works out better, you do everything for your patients but rather than having to do an 18 or 32 patient drug round you only do 4 on a day shift. Doctor nurse relationships are fairly the same as back in the UK.
Nursing is here is behind what it is in the UK, there are less nurse specialists and nurse education is basic. It is degree level but nurses here seem to have massive chunks of information missing. Evidence based practice is a new idea here, there are nurses who advocate 'rubbing' patients pressure areas to stop pressure sores. Doctors tell nurses what dressings to use.
In my hospital there is a culture that does not recognisee previous experience, I have worked in my speciality for 4 yrs before coming to Oz but on arrival was treated like a new grad. There is a lot of emphasis on post grad qualifications which you have to pay for yourself (in most cases) and you have to use your annual leave to attent university.
I would'nt move to Oz for your career, move to improve your quality of life.

[QUOTE=Sugo;10118158]I have been here for 5 yrs now, work in emergency. There are some differences, firstly there are no health care assistants.
They have managed to get some in at Austin, they ran a course, which had very positive outcomes until the vic govt wanted to introduce more and more with split shifts for the qualified nurses (thankfully this failed), therefore nurses at Austin and probably elsewhere are now very suspicious of the introduction of HCA's.
Must admit I am very disappointed as I said I miss them and only found it an asset where i worked in Scotland.
Anne its all about the paper qualification here, look at there TAFE stuff (name for college here), and people talk about certificate 1, 11, 111, and 1V ( I have done a cert 111 here in Health and Safety, they have courses for EVERYTHING, its outta control). Also not sure whats happening with the TAFE system, its getting reformed, probably in order to squeeze more money outta folks.

Hi Margaret,
thanks for your feedback. i have looked into gaining qualifications relevent to HCA eork over there, which i can do while im still in the uk, a kind of long distance learning course. unfortunately, for me to do it from here is seriously expensive.....think it was somewhere on the region of around £2,500, plus even though they offer these courses, they still want you to provide evidence of hands tasks, not quite sure how thats meant to work when im not even in Oz!!....
Thanks again, i will keep persevering.
Ann.

Re: uk nurse to australia
Hi Everyone
I am sorry to hijack your post. I am also a nurse looking to move in the next few months. I have looked into a few things and wondering if any nurses there can tell me the difference between working in private hospital and working in a government funded hospital. I know the differences in the UK but wondering if they are any different in Australia.
Any advice anyone can give would be fantastic.
Thanks
Shell
