Default Travelling with pets.

I have a post on the immigration forum about my parents joining us in Aus.
They have a dog, who I think they love more than me !!! So if they come, the dogs gotta come too.

Can anyone share their experiences and approx costs to bring a furry loved one to Aus ?

Thanks.

Stu.

They will need to speak to a specialist pet shipping company. Pet Air are highly regarded and are ran by vets.

Cost will depend on the dog as it goes by size of the crate, which obviously depends on the size of the dog. Also, where in Oz as there are only two quarantine centres - Melbourne and Sydney.

I would urge them to speak to the experts sooner rather than later as it can take some time and there are various restrictions such as some airlines wont transport at certain times of year and some airlines wont transport some breeds

As a rough estimate somewhere between £4 to 6k.

Have a chat with Golden Arrow Pet Shippers They are very obliging even for just an enquiry and have a very god rep.

We flew our two cats from the UK to New Zealand, which is a longer journey, with no probs at all.

Don't forget that this doesn't include the "hotel" fees at the Australian end - these are about $1'800 per dog for 10 days quarantine I think (please check though!).

We are bringing our cats over. It will be about £2k for them both to fly but that does not include the UK vet fees. They have to fly into Melbourne as that is where the quarantine centre is and they will stay there for a week before we can fly them up to Queensland. So that is the straightforward bit!

From the day our cats were vaccinated against rabies (remembering that the UK is overrun with rabid animals) it will take about 6 months before quarantine will let them in the country. Even though they are vaccinated, have a blood test stating that they are vaccinated and immune from rabies AND they will not have to see a vet again or have another blood test they cannot fly until September! Quarantine in Australia have stated that they have to be vaccinated for 6 months before they can fly. So if the process for dogs is the same as cats you'll see the dog about Christmas.

From the petair uk website: Since 2012 and the relaxation of pets being allowed to enter the UK, the Australian now class the UK as rabies absent/well-controlled rather than rabies free, which means that the preparation has now been extended greatly to try to ensure that rabies does not enter Australia.

Australian wild life does not need even one animal coming in to the country if there is a chance, no matter how small, that that animal has been in contact with a rabid animal.

It is no different from having to ensure that every bit of outdoor equipment/clothing is cleaned to within an inch of its life prior to bringing it over. This is an island, any way they can keep diseases out is good in my book.

I do not disagree with that however is it not bizarre that quarantine have evidence of immunity and in the 6 months following the evidence the animals will not see another vet or be tested again? If they are immune now, why will they have to wait a further 6 months? They will fly to Australia without a single check during the 6 months prior to boarding the plane?

From what I can gather it takes 180 days for an infected animal to show signs of the disease. Why there isn't a second test within days of the animal departing I have no clue unless they are happy for the animal to arrive and then be tested in Quarantine. Just a guess on my part.

I have given up wondering the rationale to be honest. Even our vet said that Australia is the only country to enforce this on vaccinated UK animals. The last case of a human getting rabies from an animal in the UK was 1922 apparently

Australia is the only country that has no shared borders and no Rabies. Makes perfect sense to me.

England/Scotland/Wales is also an island which has no rabies or shares a border with a country that has rabies either. I think NZ will also fall into that category too.

The UK has a tunnel linking it with Europe where there is plenty of rabies. No idea on NZ quarantine rules.
