Default Taxes When Bringing a Boat into Oz?

Hi All,

My dad is coming into Oz on a Contributory Parent, and he wants to bring his 40ft sailing boat with him.

Could anyone advise if he would have to pay some form of import duty, or VAT on bringing the boat into the country? If he does, can anyone advise if he might be exempt from this tax, if for example, he lived on it for 12 months when he arrived?

Any info would be appreciated.

Cheers - Baz

This might help Baz. I know the heading specifies yachts, but as it's the only reference I could find I wouldn't imagine that includes sailing boats? I know nothing about boats, in case you haven't guessed

While I've got no idea specifically, I have recently had a pipe dream to take up sailing and get a boat, I've been looking at some forums which are specific to sailing and they appear to have a lot of Australian boat owners so I suggest you check those forums out (Seabreeze and Cruisersforum).
