Hi All,

There is a very serious chance that I might be offered a job in Tasmania, so I went looking for some info to help make a decision about the possibility of moving there, and came across this thread. Lots of great info, and it sounds like a great place, but yes, a lot of chatting that is hard to sift through. Some people suggested a few new people thinking of moving to Tassie would be good - so here I am! And hopefully I have some questions that will not be all the same ones you've had before.

Bogans
How many are there really, in Hobart anyway (where the job is). Are they in the suburbs or pretty much everywhere you go around town? On public transport? Are they the kind that always ask for money, cigarettes, get into fights with each other etc?

Social Sport
Anything like that in Hobart? Indoor Sport Centres or groups of people who get together? I'm thinking specifically of soccer, and indoor soccer.

Weather
Sounds good, I actually hate the cold but coming from Canberra I assume I could handle it for the two years I might be there for with this job. Is anyone who lives in Hobart able to verify that it really doesn't rain much there? Rain only makes the cold worse, especially being a soccer coach.

Language
Any European groups/clubs/restaurants?
I want to learn Spanish. Anyone know what's on offer at the Uni, the Tafe or private options?

Transport
I heard it's just buses. Are they decent quality (not old and run down), run on time, frequent, cover lots of areas?

Newspapers
Do you guys get free local newspapers like we do in Canberra. We have the Canberra Times which isn't free, but then there is the Chronicle which is.

TV
I read somewhere that you only receive 4 out of 5 stations down there. Is that true? Which do you get out of Ten/Southern Cross, 9/Win, 7/Prime, ABC and SBS?

Renting
What's the cost like right now for a single adult? One bedroom apartment, near the main central area for example? The job is 38K a year which isn't great, but I'm only 23 and it's a great opportunity I won't get in other places.
Where would you guys suggest looking for a place to rent? I think the job will be in the main central 'city' area.

Cars
I don't drive in Canberra because I personally don't need to, but I may need to get a car for the job. Would you say it's really necessary in Hobart to have a car? What's it like trying to buy a second hand one there?

Shops
Are there many smaller shopping centres, with like 10 or so shops, spread across Hobart, or is it only the main centres?
If there are, are the groceries a rip off compared to Woolies and Coles?

Housing
What's the general quality of houses and apartments like? Someone said they aren't very cold proof. Are they mostly old, or new, do most people feel like they could have something a little cleaner/fresher/modern if they were living in another state?

Travel
People have said that holidays are expensive. Is that the airfares out of Tassie? What is the ship option like in comparison, both from a cost and time spent travelling perspective?

Furniture
Someone said that quality goods are hard to come by. What about things like sofas, washing machines etc? If I was just after something reasonably cheap but not total crap, would I be able to find anything? Or is it cheap crap, expensive stuff, and nothing in between?

Doctors
Anyone had any trouble finding decent doctors?
What about specialists?

Women!
I'm a single 23 year old man - one reason why I can move there. I read that there are quite a few young people around Hobart. Is that true? Anyone able to comment on the younger women? Are they relaxed, stressed out? All taken?

Negatives
Someone give me some reasons to stay away. Come on, be honest, and not just the bogans! I've heard about the difficulties finding work, the cold, but what's really wrong with it? Anyone lived in Canberra too and can compare? There's always something wrong with everywhere you go. There's heaps wrong with Canberra!

Thanks in advance for any answers you contribute. I appreciate the advice.

I hope to continue the conversation and learn a bit more about the Tassie lifestyle. I'm sure I'll have some more questions for you soon!

Lots! But probably no more than any other place, but I've never been asked for anything and they have never bothered me directly.

Social Sport
Anything like that in Hobart? Indoor Sport Centres or groups of people who get together? I'm thinking specifically of soccer, and indoor soccer.

Not sure about soccer but yes there are plenty of sports groups and centres

Weather
Sounds good, I actually hate the cold but coming from Canberra I assume I could handle it for the two years I might be there for with this job. Is anyone who lives in Hobart able to verify that it really doesn't rain much there? Rain only makes the cold worse, especially being a soccer coach.

Weather, mmm, we've just had the wettest winter for over 50 years (after an extremely wet spring) and in some parts of the island the worst ever! So, not good news on the rain issue but I think in general Hobart does not have high rainfall, it's just been a bad year

Language
Any European groups/clubs/restaurants?
I want to learn Spanish. Anyone know what's on offer at the Uni, the Tafe or private options?

Not sure about this one, I know there are adult courses available in a variety of languages but not sure about groups or clubs. There is a mixture of restaurants here, pretty good for the size of the place I think

Transport
I heard it's just buses. Are they decent quality (not old and run down), run on time, frequent, cover lots of areas?

Personally I think the bus service is crap here but then I'm 25 mins from the city and maybe it's better in the city area. They do run on time, aren't too old, it's just where I live there are limited services

Newspapers
Do you guys get free local newspapers like we do in Canberra. We have the Canberra Times which isn't free, but then there is the Chronicle which is.

No idea, not aware of any free paper, we don't get one here in Margate anyway

TV
I read somewhere that you only receive 4 out of 5 stations down there. Is that true? Which do you get out of Ten/Southern Cross, 9/Win, 7/Prime, ABC and SBS?

Hi, we get Southern Cross, Win, Ten, ABC and SBS, I think there are a couple of other free to view channels just coming as well

Really not sure about the rents, have a look at realestate.com.au to give you a better idea. If you want to be near the city, I would have thought that North Hobart would be nice, also South Hobart too, both close enough for better bus services etc too

Cars
I don't drive in Canberra because I personally don't need to, but I may need to get a car for the job. Would you say it's really necessary in Hobart to have a car? What's it like trying to buy a second hand one there?

Can't see that would be a problem, there are plenty of second hand car dealers around

Shops
Are there many smaller shopping centres, with like 10 or so shops, spread across Hobart, or is it only the main centres?
If there are, are the groceries a rip off compared to Woolies and Coles?

Plenty of smaller shopping areas in the different suburbs, not very exciting in my opinion, personally I think the shopping is crap here, old fashioned, boring and expensive! There are a few good grocery places but they tend to be more deli style, nice choice but a bit more pricey. Woolies and Coles dominate, just like everywhere else

Housing
What's the general quality of houses and apartments like? Someone said they aren't very cold proof. Are they mostly old, or new, do most people feel like they could have something a little cleaner/fresher/modern if they were living in another state?

Properties, varied choice from the more characterful older houses to the downright ugly, depends on your budget I guess! But no, I don't think they are cold proof at all, coming from the UK where we have lived in houses with wall insulation, double layer bricks/stone and double glazing, I find it really cold here, it's often warmer outside the house than in! But that maybe because the house we rented and the one we (stupidly) bought are both very new and if you saw how they build the new ones, it's no wonder they are cold! Timber frame, then a layer of plywood covered in blue plastic then a single layer of bricks and badly fitting windows and doors, might be bearable in the warmer states but not here! However, this is new and cheap I'm talking about, find yourself somewhere with decent walls and a woodburner and you'll be snug

Travel
People have said that holidays are expensive. Is that the airfares out of Tassie? What is the ship option like in comparison, both from a cost and time spent travelling perspective?

The ferry is quite expensive and if you live in the South like us, it is much easier to fly. Flight prices can be expensive, but it depends on how much in advance you book, as you can get some good bargains if you can book ahead. There are not that many direct flights other than to Mel and Sydney, so it seems to take longer to get everywhere

Furniture
Someone said that quality goods are hard to come by. What about things like sofas, washing machines etc? If I was just after something reasonably cheap but not total crap, would I be able to find anything? Or is it cheap crap, expensive stuff, and nothing in between?

We bought most of our own stuff with us when we moved last year, so didn't need to buy that much but I think there is a reasonable choice here, you've got cheap Fantastic Furniture, Harvey Normans, Freedom etc but nothing like Ikea etc. You've got Clive Peters, Retravision etc for white goods, we never had a problem getting what we wanted

Doctors
Anyone had any trouble finding decent doctors?
What about specialists?

We had great problems finding a doctor but we are in the Kingborough area which has had a huge growth in the last few years and the infra structure has not caught up.

Women!
I'm a single 23 year old man - one reason why I can move there. I read that there are quite a few young people around Hobart. Is that true? Anyone able to comment on the younger women? Are they relaxed, stressed out? All taken?

mmmm, not sure about young women, as a 40 something mum I dont take much notice!

Negatives
Someone give me some reasons to stay away. Come on, be honest, and not just the bogans! I've heard about the difficulties finding work, the cold, but what's really wrong with it? Blimey, you ask a lot of questions, I've done my best to answer them but they are only my opinions of course. Someone else may have different ideas.
To be totally honest, if you like hiking, camping, outdoor activities and finding your own entertainment then Tas is the place to be but if not, then I think it could be boring at your age. We have found so many beautiful places and often been the only ones there, not something we ever had in the UK. BUT we find Tas a bit claustrophobic, our kids are 11 and 13 and there is just not enough for that age group here (my opinion) and we feel we have outgrown the place already, having only been here for a year and half, that's was not the master plan However, we have not lived anywhere else in Oz so who knows whether somewhere else would be better or not. As you say, there are always pros and cons about everywhere you live, nowhere is perfect, one of our concerns about other places in Oz would be the heat and we have definitely never found it too hot or humid here in Tas, which a bonus.

I would definitely say to get yourself down here, I think there is now a direct flight to Canberra a couple of times a week. See what you think, have a look at some rentals, try the bars, restaurants etc. It won't give you the full picture but maybe help a little, if you are young and happy to move with your job then a couple of years here could be great.

By the way, I meant to say wet Autumn followed by wet Winter (not Spring) getting all confused with my seasons, I still think we should now be in Winter not Summer!!

Thanks for that Sam,

So is the TV station you refer to as Southern Cross what Canberra has as Prime, and the nation as 7, or don’t you have that station?

Anyone else able to provide some more insights from their point of view?

Anyone lived in Canberra and can compare both places?

Anyone able to comment on what the young women are like?

Hi yes southern cross is channel 7. through freeview we have One (the sports channel) 7TWO, GO, ABC2 and ABC3

We live in the North East so sorry cant help with any Hobart info but there is a Uni down there so you would presume there are a few young women around?

I think flights to Mel & Sydney are cheap, though we go from Launceston wouldnt have thought it would be much difference in price.

if you google indoor soccer clubs Hobart you will see a few, guess you could do the same for the spanish courses?

reckon the obvious thing to say is come for the weekend and see what you think

Do you guys ever feel like the place is too small?
In Canberra, you have to be pretty lucky to go out to one of the major centres or even your local shops and not see someone you know (or 20+ people you know!). I hear Tassie can be a lot worse, and I believe Hobart is about 2/3 the size of Canberra. Is it true or just a myth?
Do people tend to be friendly with everyone as a result, or is it very much stick to your own circle?

Yes, Tssie is small and they say never that everyone is related to or friends with everyone, and I have found that to be true! Having never really lived anywhere very big in the UK I don't find it a problem.

I think people are very friendly here, but I do think they seem to have their own established circles of friends and we haven't been let in yet

But you are a very different age group to us, and will probably socialise more and therefore meet plenty of new people.

Hi all,
I'm gonna get there this time, even if only for a few days - land in Hobart 9th Jan, leave again on the 13th.
Anyone who fancies a beer let me know - I'm based in Bathurst St, and anticipate a fair few drinks in the New Sydney as its right opposite, as well as a few other places like Knopwoods, so if anyone is around there, I'm buying (she said, safe in the knowledge that we don't have thousands of posters in Hobart )

Hi guys, been checking up on this thread from time to time & we still want to come over for a reccie but with one thing or another breaking & needing replacing last year (car!!) still saving the pennies to come over! Also been considering NZ & Canada but have definately ruled them out now, for various reasons!

We still have a few questions that I haven't been able to find on the forums / internet, which I was hoping you may be able to help with? Firstly one of the biggest things is leaving friends & family in the UK / France, realistically how often do you guys get back to the UK, or family / friends come over? Do you find keeping in touch by Skype / internet / phone enough?

I noticed SammyT you said that; I think people are very friendly here, but I do think they seem to have their own established circles of friends and we haven't been let in yet - is it very difficult to make good friends in Tas? I particularly worry about that as have found here (in France), people are happy to speak to you but don't want to befriend you, which can lead to quite a lonely exsitance. We are both in our 30's & have an 17 month old son & are quite outgoing, not affraid to invite people over for a drink, join clubs etc!

What really is the schooling is Tas like? Also with the OZone hole, how bad is it, do you have to be covered up all of the time?

Hi GaryVFR, hope your little girl is well, they grow up soo quickly don't they!!

HI Kastell,
If you have a little 17 months old, You will have no problem getting groups of friends, Most of my wifes friends have been ones she has meet at either swimming with the little one or ABA(Brestfeeding Group) meets.
Tassie is an awesome place for the little ones, Lots of parks have nice play areas, and also free BBQ's so can also meet people there.
What area of Tassie you looking at coming to.
Also what line of work you both in??
Gary Vikky and Hollie.

Hi again

Just to answer some of your questions:

Travel back to the UK is expensive, much more to fly Oz to UK than the other way round. I took my 2 children back last July as my mother was getting married and that cost over $7000, we can't afford to go back this year but may consider a visit in 2011.

Skype and email are great, but at the beginning they made me feel sadder as I was homesick but now I find it a good way to keep in touch.

I think it is hard to make friends, we have been here for 19 months and have a lot of acquaintances but not many friends. But I think having a toddler will help as you will mix much more with other parents through playgroups etc so you may find it much easier.

Schooling - not particularly impressed, in comparison to where they were at in the UK they have not even caught up to that level yet but as your child has obviously not started school yet you should find your son will at the same level as the other children from the beginning.

Ozone layer - yes, you do need to be more careful, it is definitely easier to get burnt here, even on days that are cloudy but it doesn't have to stop you doing anything, you just get used to putting on cream more frequently and covering up when necessary.

Hope that helps a little, take care, Sam

Thanks for the info Gary & Sammy!

Gary I posted last about a year ago, but to re-fresh you Launceston area sounds good, would want to be semi rural & have acreage as have horses etc, would love to be near the coast but not sure if we'd find work? OH is a Carpenter & I used to be Admin & would want to be again.

Obviously all this depends on if we like Tas when we eventually get to have a reccie! I'm sure we will but you never know until you go to a place (learnt this after a trip to Canada - I loved it, OH liked it but couldn't live there!!).

Hi Carl,
Nice to see someone else moving to the north. Now the next question are you looking around the Launceston area??? What sort of things do you want in the area you are looking to live(Do you want semi rural or town living) and where are you looking at going to work???
Let us know and will give you some answers.
