"Sunday" Roast Beef from Australian butchers
OK, so we've only been here a few weeks so sometimes things don't go as planned...
Last week we walked into a butcher, asked for some beef to roast for Sunday lunch and it was the best we've had in years. This week o/h asks for Silverside in a different butcher and we just had a Sunday roast made from what I think is known here as "Corned Beef", i.e. after roasting it was pink/red all the way through, tasted salty and had rubbery texture I'm sure a little in a sarnie with salad would have been nice it wasn't roast beef!
When you want a joint of beef to make Sunday dinner/roast roast, what do you ask for, please!
Thanks!

Coles sometimes have a rib roast. Not the same as the rib roasts you get in the uk (smaller), but great tasting.
I also made the mistake with beef silverside ONCE when I first got here, never again lol.

you need to cook it in water ( boil slowly ) with vinegar, sugar, cloves and a couple of bayleaves otherwise it tastes shite ( as you now know )

Bought something once they called corned beef, and it was more like luncheon meat After that I stuck to lamb or pork, much easier

Just ask for the cut you want to roast. If you want fresh silverside, ask for that and also say NOT corned, if you want to be on the safe side! I have had quite a few silverside roasts. It's all part of the learning curve.

Topside Roast is a pretty safe option.

I just scrolled to the bottom of this thread and there is an advert in bold letters that just says "Queensland Spit Roast". Nice.

Re: "Sunday" Roast Beef from Australian butchers
I worked for a meat processing company a few years ago (in the admin dept I have to confess - I'm not man enough to do the others job) and I used to have this conversation all the time!
We would buy rib of beef for our Sunday roasts in the UK. I have found the most similar to this here is the scotch (which would be our first choice for bbq steak too). To start with my butcher thought I was bit extravagent but he's got used to me now
I'd prefer to pay more and have less meat in our diets than buy crap! Kids as a result sound very precotious when we're out for a bbq, requesting their scotch fillet medium when all the other kids are asking for more sauce on their snags

Thanks all, topside & silverside are very similar roasting cuts in the UK, but not here it seems. The beef is generally great here, but we won't be asking for Silverside again, when we're after a roast..

I often just buy a whole rump and cut it in to roasting joints. Yummy.

Must be good to eat quality Aussie meat instead of all that mad cow diseased and foot n mouth diseased rubbish your used to eating in the UK. No wonder theres no many vegetarians in the UK.

You can't beat a hefty chunk of Aberdeen Angus that's been bred in the Highlands, best beef in the world. Aussie meat is pretty damn good though.
