Only the good die young I guess...
I think that's really sad - his enthusiasm for nature the environment were second to none, and he made it really interesting and engaging for kids too.
A real shame.

Thats really sad, you've gotta feel for his family.
I saw his him and his little girl bombing around on a Motorbike in that zoo thing they own in QLD last year.
Im pretty sure I went out snorkelling on reef out by the low isles, where it happened.

Good grief, he was only 44!
The naturalist and television star Steve Irwin has died in a diving accident in far north Queensland. He was 44.
[...]
In 2003, he spoke to the ABC's Australian Story about how he was perceived in his country.
"When I see what's happened all over the world, they're looking at me as this very popular, wildlife warrior Australian bloke," he said.
"And yet back here in my own country, some people find me a little bit embarrassing.
"You know, there's this... they kind of cringe, you know, 'cause I'm coming out with 'Crikey' and 'Look at this beauty'.
"Just say what you're gonna say, mate. You know, is it a cultural cringe? Is it, they actually see a little bit of themselves when they see me, and they find that a little embarrassing?
"I'm fair dinkum, like kangaroos and Land Cruisers, winged keels and bloody flies! I think we've lost all that. I think we've all become very, sort of, money people."
ABC.
I guess I always assumed he was indestructible. It sure looked that way!

Isnt there laws about things like this not being made public until after the family have been told?? If not, there should be...

Very, very sad - I first thought of him as a complete maniac, but his enthusiasm was so infectious you could not help but admire the guy.
A great ambassador for Australia who will be missed hugely.
I cannot stop thinking about his poor kids who will not have a dad to grow up with. Although I am sure in time that they will be proud to remember him through his countless hours of film and lasting legacy.

Shocking news to wake up to!! He was a cracking embassador for the country and will be sadly missed... our thoughts can only be with his family. Dreading telling my own kids - never mind the message to be passed onto his own kids).

bloody shameful.
bloody shameful.
I just hope someone gets to Terri before she gets back into Civilisation and finds out through the newspaper or TV...
Gotta wonder if Terri is off trekking Cradle Mountain and Steve was off swimming in Cairns...where are the kids?? Do they know yet??
Should be interesting to see how this all unfolds..
