Default State car legislation

I get the impression from other threads that there are some odd rules about driving a car in one state if it's registered in another state. Can anyone clarify?

ive got a 91 magna which we travelled half way around oz in. registered in victoria. live in qld. been pulled over by the cops ( wife is a cop) and never had any worries. you are supposed to register the vehicle in the state you reside but its to much hassle. been in qld for over 3 years and i just pay victorian rego every year online and they sent a sticker to my house. the car is in a good road condition and hardly gets used but its there if i need it
