Yes after 13 years you become part of the furniture to the point where you find the UK a bit 'cute' : especially watching aspects of UK life on the box.
I like the best UK life has to offer but it's hard going past the Melbourne equivalent in a nice package. All set up just so, sports, the Arts, work, skiing, hiking. Where you get to make a bit of a mark in ways that surprise you like find yourself in front of 40,000 people and on the telly (Gulp!) with little effort..whose idea was that??!!
I looked up the Kent country village I lived in as a Child fora few years expecting to see a nice church and stunning scenery out of Midsomer and was shocked to see a few architecturally dour buildings, a sort of Spar shop, muddy brown fields and overgrown hedgerows. Reminded me that not everywhere in the UK is chocolate box. I still pinch myself every item I drive down our road : it's a beautiful tree lined avenue which opens out to a vantage point across rolling hills and then plunges into a valley : the stuff of vineyards...and tourist brochures ..

I came here 6 years ago. Two kids wife (now ex wife) and was in same boat.
But you know what...my lot would have been no better had we not done this. Also I'd not have swam in GBR. I'd never have seen NZ. I'd not have seen the Lions win a tour. There are so many things I'd never have found. The most important thing I found on this adventure (and still on it) was myself.
So yeah. It was worth it.

15 years ago, Sydney was one of my favourite cities in the world. Now, I find it dodgy, and increasingly so every time I go back (just my personal opinion!).
Last time I was there (a few months ago) I saw two girls openly shooting up on one of the footpaths by the train station.
Not my life. If Xizzles wants to go there, more power to him/her.

Jokes aside, it's not all drugs and booze, doom and gloom though. My nieces are doing really well at Ascham (hence the mention of private schooling in a different thread), so there's still hope yet eh?

Well, I do want to go there (Sydney), but that's because I have nieces (two young girls) and nephews (young boys) who reside in Sydney. I sure hope the two girls you saw "shooting up" by the train station weren't my nieces, else it's time to have a friendly (or not so friendly) uncle to nieces chat very soon!

No one shoots up these days. You don't shoot up Ice in the Western Suburbs. The poster is either attempting a wind up or is referring to something they saw in the 90's. They haven't even named the location and Sydney is a big place. For Ascham it will be Coke. The Eastern Suburbs drug of choice. You don't shoot that up either.
I for one have no idea what the current terminology for drug taking is but I understand 'shooting up' and if there are needles around then I would assume that's what has been happening. What they put in the needles is pretty much irrelevant in relation to the discussion as to what suburbs are considered 'safe'. (And we know that every suburb has a drug issue of some form or other and that issue doesn't necessarily make the suburb unsafe).

I'm sure it's just a turn of phrase. You obviously know way more than I and others do with what the current drug of choice in various suburbs is (not hard, personally I have no clue).

There's been some research done on the toxins in waste water over Australia to see the types of drugs being used in certain locations. Ice (smoked or snorted) is fhe drug of choice in Western Sydney and Cocaine (snorted) is the choice for Eastern Sydney.
The shoot up variety (heroin) has died a death. You would have to be looking hard, especially on a quick trip to Sydney, to see any back alley stuff of that nature going on.
Do I believe the story? Nope. Sorry. Its just propaganda.

The high is instant from snorting or smoking. Injection is rare to non existent even though you can .... hell you can inject a Panadol if you had the tools.
