It is a King Single lift up storage divan. The base cost $650, the mattress was half price in a sale but still cost $750, and we got a good mattress protector and delivery for another $100.

What is a King Single? Is that an Australian explanation? Gosh they really are expensive over there. Perhaps I might take ours now.

A King Single is like a small double- about 4 feet wide and a bit longer than her single pine bed which she has had since she was 3. A proper 4 foot 6 double would have made it a very tight squeeze in her room.

We currently have a queen sized bed, which is the same size as a UK King!!

As I said, sizes are a bit different out here.....

There are wide variances in prices, and obviously quality. You could get a decent enough bed and mattress cheaper from places like Ikea.

We needed a good quality one, as DD tends to throw herself onto the bed, and most of her friends also sit on it, and they are no longer small people. DD chose the mattress- we would have gone for a cheaper one, but she needed to be comfortable, and at 18, she has the sense to make the right choice.

Oh I get you now, I thought that when you said 'King Single' it perhaps meant a fat single bed.

Well I suppose if you want quality you have to pay for it, no matter which country you live in.

Yeah I was having a look at Australia Ikea online. My sister-in-law has just bought a new bed from there ( in England ) and it's actually comfy and looks good too. It's an option.

when I added up for insurance purposes it quickly came to 28000 pounds worth( Furniture, beds, washing machine, dryer, Pots, pans dishes etc) all from a little mid terrace. Cannot imagine the cost to buy all new over here now. As already said if its a top end car yes, ageing workhorse then no.

Murray family is an unknown quantity at this point
Talking Re: Ship car and furniture or start again !

Thank you for all your comments. I have decided to leave the car here, to much hassle for a car that's not special. Thanks to Molly Coddle I am taking the good furniture and lots of bits like kitchen stuff, kids bikes etc in a large move cube. That's that problem solved yaaa.

Now the mindfield of schools. I am putting my 9 year old in a state school somewhere around/between Kawana Waters and Little Mountain/Pelican Waters. So If anyone can recommend/warn me of any I would be very greatfull because it is like a mindfield and my head is going to explode lol x.

A decent mattress costs a bloody fortune over here. Disproportionate to the cost of the bed base. You can buy Sealy Grand Pillow Top Deluxe Mattress in the U.k for < 500 quid, here that same mattress is circa $2500 bucks.
If you need a good firm mattress I recommend the mattress company in Yandina. A small family business here on the Sunshine Coast. They made us one to order for $1500 bucks & it's awesome. I'm very happy to recommend them to all. Oh & the girl in the front office is a Pom so no worries with translation.

[I have no affiliation to them, just excellent service]

Ditto everyone else. Ship the lot and dump the car if its ordinary. In fact I'd buy a vintage jag and flip it out over here as I think you get a tax break on being a new arrival car. The prices are nuts here for nice cars.

I'd stock up on M&S bedding and towels, books, dvds etc and get it shipped too.

Apologies for butting in on this thread, we are at present in Spain having lived here for the last 9 years (both retired) but now seriously considering a move to Australia to be with our only daughter.

Does anybody have any experience of such a move, thinking mainly of shipping firms and costs etc.

Plenty of Spain - UK - Spain removers but a bit thin on the ground when it comes to Spain to Australia

I guess it depends second hand prices are higher but new cars?
Bought a new VW golf in SA it was cheaper and better spec than the UK equivalent.

Also as depreciation is less then new makes more sense here.
