People get hung up on the big things; sofa's, dinning sets, etc. But its the little things that really cost such as kitchen, garage stuff etc.
Think about it, you've just arrived in a strange place and have no idea which shops to use for the best quality/value. I will give you an example, every bloke in the UK has a Rose's tin full of screws, nuts, bolts, washers etc. collected over many years. I sold mine for £3.50 I must have since spent a small fortune in Bunning buying poncey packs of screws at $6 a shot
You also need to bear in mind that much of what is sold here is simply crap. I'm talking Poundland/Wilkenson standard for most shops here.
I've never had to replace so many things in such a short space of time, our dinning suite lasted less than 3 years

Are power tools expensive there? Some of mine have had their day and need replacing.

(I'll bring all the screws and bits and bobs).

I'm sure UK fridges do work Ok in OZ.
apparently fridges won't..? so we're not taking ours... using it to the last day something about it won't withstand the heat in oz

that sounds expensive, but some of it is down to currency fluctuations, no? Last time I lived there (10-12 years ago) exchange rate was typically 2.5 AUD to the GBP and it did go as high as 3 AUD but local prices perhaps do not fluctuate quite the same way....
