However the other states would fight this because it would require national resources to go to NSW.

On a site full of migrants we really should know better than anyone why the cities are over populated.

I would love to live in the rural areas. as long as the following happened.

1 ) I could get a job I liked and would support me and the wife.
2 ) I had access to schools
3 ) I had access to healthcare.

From what I found on arrival outside of melbourne these oppurtunities tend to be greatly reduced.

As long as they don't resemble Basildon, Harlow & Bracknell.

Indeed. More could be accomplished if we removed State level of government entirely. Its a waste of time, resources and frankly fresh air to breathe in the case of Anna Bligh.

Do you think that by removing the state level of government it would make the slightest bit of difference?

Large, centralised government is never a good thing. A very socialist ideal.

Large, centralised government is needed for large, centralised projects. State infighting needs to be eliminated for projects like an East Coast water grid to even have a hope of getting off the ground.

We currently have three levels: Federal, State and Council, and some of those councils ones are pretty large.

We could easily do without one of them. Half the time, if it isn't the States fighting Federal it is the Council fighting States.

IMO sack the corrupt states and merge councils to sizes that are less susceptible to corruption whilst still be able gain economies of scale. States have to represent cities are rural areas. A council for Sydney would represent Sydney. NSW Government bitches about the fed and vice versa. Screw em.

I saw that later, on TV, saying to get back to an annual migration intake of about 200,000, down from 300,000.

However, I am not sure how those figures would affect things...

The 2010/2011 Total Migration Allocation = 168,700 places
The 2009/2010 Total Migration Allocation = 168,700 places
The 2008/2009 Total Migration Allocation = 171,320 places

I am really not sure now...

OK. they include 457 visas, and Students in that figure of 200k and 300k.
LEIGH SALES: On the numbers, you've been using a figure talking about population growth called the net overseas migration figure and you say that for Australia it's 300,000. Where's that figure from?

SCOTT MORRISON: It's from the ABS statistics, Australian demographic statistics and our population is made up of all those people who are here for 12 months or more and our population growth is our net overseas migration plus our natural increase.

And more than two thirds of our population increase is due to net overseas migration.

LEIGH SALES: On those ABS figures, as you say, when they collate that net overseas migration figure it includes anyone who's been here for 12 months or more.

So that includes students who are studying in Australia. That is a very major and growing component of that figure.
http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/conte...0/s2865711.htm
The next set of figures to be quoted will be the real immigration numbers, proving that they did reduce from 300k to 168,700

Every Government since 1999 has been trying to figure out how to filter the Internet. I used to run an ISP and this was even a hot topic back then.
And why shouldn;t there be some kind of censorship of the internet?? There is some really, really disgusting stuff on there that is probably causing psychologiocal damage. Do we let 6 year olds watch xxx movies at the cinema? The censorship should be decided by an independent agency not connected to the government.

We don't (shouldn't) allow 6 years olds to surf the net on their own or cross roads on their own either. A lot of kids see X rated movies that their parents leave in the entertainment unit at home, should we send ASIO around to parents houses to make sure the unit is locked? Parents should parent, it's not up to the state, the filter will give a false sense of security as it wont filter the nasties anyway.

I wouldn't let a 6 year old play with matches either. There is no such thing as an independent agency to decide ratings. We still don't even have a rating for 18+ games despite the overwhelming will of the public on the issue. Ideology and practice are entirely different in the modern world. Take some personal responsibility as a parent and install entirely free DNS server filtering or completely free software, both of which will do a better job than ISP filtering.
