Re: Renault 5 gt turbo
I always liked the Renault 5 GT turbo - my mate had one, and it was more like low flying than driving...

I'm sure there must be a law to allow foreign registered cars to be driven on our roads, to allow for things like classic car rallies, people travelling around the world etc.

Are you sure they are not European style plates, such as from PPQ?www.ppq.com.au/PlateInfo.aspx#pnlEuro

[Some 20 odd years ago I had a bright-red Renault 11 Turbo which was a bit quick, until the accelerator cable jammed up once and the turbo went 'pop' as the bearings failed....]

They were great cars. I had a mate who had a Fiat Uno IE which we used to travel down the M1 in to go clubbing. Would tell you how fast we travelled on that deserted stretch of motorway at 4 in the morning, but the holier-than-thou thought police would be on my case...

Great drive the old 5gt , I bought an 11 gt for £300 same as the 5 just a grandma body on it , a 5 would have been £3k at the time !

I found something about 'Temporary Imports [Carnets]' that would seem to indicate you can run around on overseas plates if the car's importation is not permanent, but I wouldn't imagine it would apply to something who lives here belting around in a Renault 5 chav-mobile. I suppose though that an early Renault 5 Turbo almost qualifies as a classic now.
They would still have to have officially recognised and legal plates from the relevent state/territory.
"All vehicles registered in NSW must have official number plates mounted and clearly displayed at the front and rear. Motorcycles and trailers only need to have number plates on the rear.
The plates must match the details on the vehicle's Certificate of Registration, and must have an appropriate sticker if the vehicle has an LPG or CNG installation.
Special number plates
Standard NSW number plates have black characters on a yellow background. However, you can have different colours and number/letter combinations on special number plates.
If you'd like to know more about the costs, choices and possibilities of special number plates, visit myRTA." from the RTA website. Other states have similar regulations.
The temporary carnets would apply mainly to vehicles such as visiting military exercise vehicles and specifically the official US Presidential(inc Secret Service) motorcade vehicles.
If what several posters have seen is correct, which I think they are not foriegn plates and are the Australian Euro-style plates with a national flag sticker put on, then they are illegal, therefore the vehicle is illegal, therefore no insurance cover
