Reality check

Re: Reality check
No you don't. They sound like some private school fees. Most public schools, whilst they're not free, fees are rarely more than $300 per year plus the odd 'contributory' sum of $25. Uniform, books and stationery on top of that but it still wouldn't top a grand, if that.
It does in certain schools in Melbourne....there are mandatory supply your own apple macs for starters....Northcote high....Princes Hill, Brunswick State, Coburg High, and Uni high..would all cost one at least 4K per annum...thats without schol trips and outings which kids can be excluded from if they dony pay....however all of those schools compete head for head against private schools in desirability.

Re: Reality check
I hope I'm wrong but as far as I can tell you (and we) would have to apply for a temporary residents program to put your kid/s in a public school which if you plan to have a 457 visa will cost between $5,000 and $6,000 per child plus a registration fee. This is for NSW but i'm fairly sure it was the same for Victoria. Also not all schools accept 457 visa holders so you need to check that too. Private schools are not that much more expensive so were undecided what to do for the best.

As a mum of 4, looking into getting permanent visa yourself might be wise.

Yes that figure sounds about right for NSW, I have never seen anyone report that a school won't take children on a 457 visa though. Don't think Victoria charges school fees for temporary residents, but OP permanent anyway.

Re: Reality check
We came out to NSW on a 457. Rather than pay $5000 each per child to go to state school, we used the money (less than that) to send them to private school.
The only problem is that now we are permanent residents, we are still paying private school fees for one of them.
Luckily, the other got into a selective public school.
Anyway, if you have the pay that kind of money, unless it's a really good public school, I'd look into private.
