Default Qantas Frequent Flyer | How much is it worth?

I came across this offer from Citibank offering 70,000 Qantas points for signup: https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn...signature-card

The annual cost is $299 and an additional $49 for Qantas Rewards Program. So even if I get the card for the points alone (and cancel the card within a year) I will be spending $348 for 70,000 Qantas points. Do you think it is worth it? Where can 70,000 Qantas points take me (Economy Class)?

Qantas FF points, poor value? - Air Travel - Travel

It's a con, basically.

You've got to pick your fights when it comes to QFF - not all options are created equal

A OW flight from Perth to London is 56000 points and about $350 but a return is 112000 points and about $1100 in charges. So a good option would be a QFF flight to Europe and book a normal flight back (probably cheaper for a return)

QFF can be decent value for domestic flights. A OW from Perth to Hobart is 18000/$70 - not bad IMO. It was good when QF was allied with BA as excellent intra-Europe options were available - we flew Salzburg-Gatwick OW for under 10000 points with low charges

Flights out of the UK can have high charges as their departure tax is the highest in the world

Many people, like me, collect most of their QFF points through shopping and credit card use, so this has an influence on their charges. It's money for jam if you are sensible - we've flown to South Africa, NZ, Singapore, domestic on QFF and most of the points have haven't cost me a cent. I've taken out credit cards, collected the points and then cancelled

QF have a calculator on their site that shows you where you can go for your points

Looks like this Citibank Qantas Signature Card is not worth it for me ATM. I was planning to use the points for my 2 way travel to Jakarta this month but it will take 6-8 weeks to have the points credited.

Quoting from https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn...signature-card :
* The bonus 70,000 Qantas Points offer is available to new Citibank Credit Cardholders who apply for the Citibank Qantas Signature Card by 20 April 2015 and make an eligible purchase on their Card within three months of Card approval. Eligible purchases are retail purchases and exclude cash advances, refunds, balance transfers and special promotions. Qantas Points will ordinarily be credited within 6-8 weeks of meeting spend criteria.

I collect a lot of points through business travel. I am now gold on Qantas which is hard to get so the lounge access is great but you won't get that on a credit card points. I always find it hard to use the points. Never any FF seats available. I have enough for about 5 return trips to London but I can never seem to get seats. I don't use a FF credit card. Perhaps I should. I've never been able to justify the fee.

I'm gold with QF and Emirates and never the twain shall meet.
QF is pretty goid for internal flights though availability is getting tougher especially at peak times. Never tried it long haul as have always used Emirates for that.
I always found EK program pretty good but this year it seems they have significant upped reward flight costs/miles needed. I wouldnt theyre a rip off but theres no such thing as a free lunch (or flight for that matter).

I tend to jump on these offers, even although I don't rate QFF as a program...adding up credit card bonuses over time generally gets me, relatively quickly to the cost of a business class ticket somewhere...my goal.

This offer is OK, but there have been far better ones.

Citi have previously done 60k on reduced $125 annual fee.

Last year ANZ were doing 50k on $0 annual fee for the first year. I know of people who actually applied, and were approved for, all 3 varieties of the ANZ card and got 150k points for $0! I got the Black card which includes (overseas) lounge access plus a couple of Qantas lounge passes and good ongoing earning rate. I just have to remember to cancel it before the $425 annual fee kicks in!

I did the Citibank offer last year - 80000 for $349 annual fee. Waited until the points had credited and then rang to cancel - they wanted to keep me so they waived the annual fee.

I have earned (through offers and credit card spend) enough points for a Business Class return to Europe in under 12 months. The offers are totally worth it for me and I can always find a flight that suits me.

Good luck!

Yes, if you are clever with the credit cards, you can earn some decent points - I've done plenty

Flying to Manchester First class in June on Emirates (QFF points). With business class is can be very hard to get availability with QFF

I have an ANZ card that gives points, plus building them up through flying, and usually manage to get 2 free domestic flights a year, plus an upgrade on one leg of each flight home and back.I've got up to Silver, but haven't managed Gold yet. Q Club lounge access is worth every penny, especially as its one of the few things I can salary sacrifice.

BTW if you're hunting around for credit card offers to surf to this is a good link to find them...quick scroll up and down should give you a good indication of bonus points vs annual fee dollars:

Qantas Credit Card Selector

ANZ 50k at $95 still looks good in this list! (That's 15k short of a one way in business to HKG with Cathay in my thinking!)

...and there's NAB at 40k for $0.

I managed to get to Gold with Qantas due to about 4 or 5 trips to the UK in the last year due to visiting my sick father then the funeral.

Best bit about QFF is using points for upgrades, that is, I believe the best value for money for the points.

You can join QFF for free by doing it in conjunction with Woolworths loyalty card.

You need to buy a full value fair in order to use points for an upgrade right? And even if you do buy the full value fare there's no guarantee of the upgrade right?
