Default Pros and cons of Geelong?

Hello

We're moving out to oz after xmas and I'm currently researching places to live.

What are the pros and cons of living in Geelong please?

We are a family of three, with a young son who will be four when we move out.

Thanks in advance!

We started off North East of Melbourne and lived there for 6 months but found it too busy. We have lived in Geelong for nearly 18 months now and never looked back. There is a good selection of schools and obviously we are very close to some beautiful beaches. Geelong has all of the shops we need but Melbourne is only about an hour away by car if you need more.

It certainly suits us, we are a family of five too and when we moved here our youngest was just 5.

Feel free to pm me, lots more to put and more than happy to answer any questions

Pros

Cheaper housing than Melbourne
Some very nice suburbs with good schools
Access to Great Ocean Road and its many stunning beaches
Access to greater Geelong region and its many wineries
Good nightlife for size
Lots of waterfront events in summer
Good selection of eateries to suit all budgets
Some well paid jobs with local large employers Shell, Ford being 2 examples

Cons

Bit of s**thole in many parts
Very industrial on the Melbourne side (this helps with employment though)
Cold in winter
Shopping is so so if your a shopaholic type
Corio bay is not Sydney harbour

Overall not a bad spot it has grown on me I work in Geelong but live in Torquay and find myself spending more weekend time in Geelong than previously.

We are just starting to discover its delights after 18 months here!

We love it here.

I'd agree with Mike's pros and cons. On the cons, you get dodgy areas in every town tbh.

It's big but not so big you get swallowed up. I love the fact that I usually bump into someone I know when I'm out in town etc. Helped me to feel settled. More than happy with Kinder/Schools available, although secondary will need some careful planning and money I suspect! Have set up funds for the kids already.

PM if you want any specifics..........
