2) Meeting fellow immigrants would be a negative step when you are attempting full integration into a new culture/society.

...

Does anybody else feel that meeting immigrants or becoming friends with other immigrants may be a bad idea?

...
For what it is worth, I expect I will be going to the Brisbane meet.

As for meeting other British immigrants being a negative step - I doubt it. Mind you - I have been here for 2 and a half years and have only met one fellow Brit socially (and that was pollyanna the other day). I have met some poms at client sites at work and have certainly enjoyed the sort of conversations that can only happen when you have a shared cultural background (references to kids TV mainly) but I have never set out to look for Poms to socialise with - but then I married an Aussie, so already had a set of friends and family ready made.

Part of my problem with the Pommie blokes I meet here is that they always want to talk about soccer and then look confused when I have no idea who they are talking about.

I think the only real issue would be if you set out to join clubs for poms, only went out drinking with poms etc. In other words tried to live as a true ex-pat rather than an immigrant. A friend of mine spent some time working in Cairo and several years working in Singapore. In both places he was there as an ex-pat - a British person working abroad (and teaching johnny foreigner a thing or two at the same time). That was not really his attitude, but the whole lifestyle stank of that type of thinking. There were "British Clubs" where you could go and eat your roast beef followed by stodgy pudding and custard every week. Sad sad sad places.

Australia is very different because not only is it a developed country, but also much of the cultural background is common.

Cheers,

DagBoy

Hi All Brisbanites,

K (36), C (44), S (8) and B (8) are coming out to validate PR visas in April - over the Easter holidays. Would love to meet up with some/all of you. We don't consider ourselves Poms as we have led such mixed up lives. I was born in Scotland, lived in Oz Age 2-17, moved back to UK, married, children etc and burning desire to move back Down-Under. Hubs born England, Education in USA & Canada and now doesn't feel he 'fits in' with mindset in the UK. Boys - energetic, sporty and very clever and totally understimulated in the UK.
Would love to hear your verdict on whether we would 'fit'.

K

ps. small no. of posts but have been reading forum for last 50 weeks (length of time to process our PR visas) so I feel I know a lot of you already...

Hi Mrs Dagboy et al

We arrive in Brisbane on 1 Dec 03 and would hope to be able to join you for any meet up - Wynnum would be ideal for us as that is where we hope to settle. As and when anything is confimed, we would be very appreciative of the details.

Joining others, imho, can only be good and would not be seen by us as a Pommie thing. Having lived in Germany, Cyprus and Holland previously we have looked for local freindhips, regardless of nationality. One of my reasons in choosing Australia was because of the diverse culture that exists - when I visited last year this was one of the positive things that struck me particularly about Brisbane.

Counting down the days........

Steve

Hi everyone,
Sounds like we are going to be on for 2 meets after all - one each side of Xmas! I was beginning to get a bit doubtful about whether it would work, but thinks look more positive today!!!

Tina - whats this strange word you are using...."freezing" ----- hmm, somewhere I think it rings a bell! Just to make you jealous, its 9am and I'm sitting here in shorts with kookaburras shouting outside the door in the sunshine, and little lizards running across the doorstep......!!!! If thats not incentive enough to get you all here, don't know what is - its paradise (even without rose tinted specs!)

Wow, great to see so many responses, both for this one & the next one .

Steve, tell Karen to check her email re PO boxes & a couple of other things

KCSB, are S & B boys or girls? we have identical boys, aged 5 (almost 6 ).

Everyone else, we will keep working on the idea, does anyone have a preference for dates? As I said, most of those just arriving shouldnt have many commitments at that time, but if anyone does have a preference for the Dec one (either 7th or 14th, both Sundays), please let us know. Also a couple of people have mentioned liking the idea of Wynnum, does anyone have any objections to it? My thinking is that somewhere as cool as possible will probably be a good thing, particularly at that time of year . As Polly mentioned there are excellent facilities, bbqs, toilets, showers, playgrounds, a couple of shops right across the road & a small sandy beach for the kids (& big kids! ) to play on or swim, as well as the pool (assuming its finished its renovations). Also very easy to get to from most of Brisbane, only about 10 mins from the Gateway bridge, so you can get to it from north or south. And you dont have to go anywhere near the city for those still finding their way around. Anyone from the western suburbs may have a bit more of a drive, but thats my pick anyway (not influenced by the fact that I live here & there are a few people moving to the area in any way LOL).

And we mustn't forget Marc & Claire (the Foggies), they arrive in a week or 2 & Im sure they might like to come along as well.

Sorry about the weirdo post that had to be edited, something strange going on with my PC!

Wynnum sounds fine to me (for the later meet). Lets hope everything falls into place for Sus and I, and we will only have a 100 yard walk to meet you all

Hi

We'd be interested in the pre-Christmas meet at Wynnum so please keep us in the loop! When you've just arrived, December isn't the social whirl it is for other people!

Thanks

My thoughts exactly Rachel! Unlike the Dagboys, I'll have only been here a couple of months by Christmas, so I'm expecting it to be a bit quiet, which is one reason why a meet before Christmas sounds good.
Keep your eyes on the forum, and we'll keep you up to speed!
