Re: Perth job offer, AUD1600 dayrate
Thanks Irishbloo; good point.
My wee spreadsheet indicates the following per year:
> Net pay = AUD 964 x 220 days = AUD 212000
> Cost of me living as single in Perth = AUD 70,000
> Cost of flights to and from UK = AUD 13,000
> Send money back to wifey back in UK = AUD 60,000
> Which leaves AUD 69,000, as savings etc.
Is AUD 70,000 a sensible budget for me as a single in perth?
Cheers,

Food is not going to be costing you more than $200 a week, unless you are eating out every night.
Renting a Toyota Corolla from Bayswater is going to be $25 a day, plus petrol.
Entertainment $2-300 a week unless you are caning it every night.
Pre-pay mobile, PAYG 3G internet is not going to cost much. Use skype for overseas contact.
Flight to the UK is going to be $2000-4000 (tops) depending on time of year.
$55-60k should do it.

Many thanks to all repliers!
The feeling I'm getting from the replies is that I don't need to worry, it's a go, and that I should thank my lucky stars I've got this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
Sincere thanks again to all. If there's ever an opportunity to meet in a Perth pub I'll buy the Stellas!
Cheers,

A friend works for Gorgon LNG. She rents a 1-bed, fully serviced apartment in the city centre for about $450 a week (it's very nice too).

Well to give you a clue of the situation here. There is a donate a banana for a primate program at the local zoo.
If you're able to buy bananas it's probably best to get them in the wee hours of a 24 hour store. If you get them at peak shopping time people tend to point you out and shout abuse on the lines of"it's alright for some"Everybody joins in.I do it myself as I'm in the can't afford a banana brigade.
Anyway,you'll do just fine.
Best of luck for your future in Australia.

This site quotes figures from the official Australian Bureau of Stastitics as at Oct-Dec 2010:
http://www.livingin-australia.com/salaries-australia/
Note they are gross salaries and average figures.
We discussed this in another thread recently and came to the conclusion that the mean figure would be roughly $10k less so the mean wage for people living in WA is about $63k.
On a net basis you would be earning four times what the very large majority earn and more than double the usual for the high paying mining sector.
