Certainly Queensland, with QAS, is paid staff. We have volunteer firefighters and SES but to me knowledge no volunteers in QAS itself. Shame they stopped sponsoring too, we used to have loads of Brits around the place - and the recruiting office used to read BE too

Is St. John of God and the St. John's Ambulance service the same?

I know there are St. John of God hospitals in Bunbury / Bussleton but assumed they were not related to St. John's Ambulance service.

One of my kids is a student paramedic, but now double degree as the job situation at the end of it looks pretty slim to be honest.

Other issue is the violence towards them, the drug/booze culture, pretty dangerous job now. Horrendous incidents.

IN Qld and Victoria its definitely a UNI degree. Which as I said by no means guarantees work and its a very specific training, only really leading to that job.

One thing with the bigger states, a job could mean rural remote placement, as in 15 hours from the capital of that state for eg. Not for everyone, son is in Victoria as its smaller, less chance of ending up having to go to some hot hell hole.

Admire anyone who can do that job

I'd query the 'now' tbh. Got several friends both here and in the UK who are paramedics and they've had loads of violent episodes since they started 10/20/30 years back. There have always been ****wits around sadly.
