Julia Gillard is a very respected person and has impressed politicians on both sides, the press and government staff. Lets hope she lives up to her potential.

The fact she is female is irrelevant to me accept as a sign of progress towards more representation by women.

Yes, but still a long way to go until women's unique perspective is fully represented in parliament.

Actually Rosemary Follett (how could I forget Rosemary) who was elected to ACT was first I think, although of course ACT isnt a state. They are all party hacks anyway and there at the behest of the party - they only get elected by the people in their electorate not the people as a whole.

Fickle bunch the Aussies.
I like Gillard and think she's more intelligent and more politically competent than Rudd. I can't see her getting elected though unless she's got some seriously good pals in the media.

If Abbott gets in I'm seriously going to consider going home. That bloke is a nutjob.

Hmmm. I'm not convinced. In the space of 24 hours, we've gone from a well educated and eloquent public speaker that was fluent in Mandarin to a ginger bogan that has questionable skills in English as her first language...

Elizabeth 1st is still alive?? Her title in Australia is still Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia.

Although the states like to think of themselves as countries, they're still just states - and therefore the state leaders carry the title of Premier not Prime Minister.

If you vote Greens then Labor may well not lose - votes for Greens filter down to votes for Labor in the preferences.

Amen, as an Aussie and having lived my whole life in Sydney (unfortunately)this really p*sses me off that Gillard was literally made PM overnight, Labour is playing with fire. I've always supported them but now I want my vote back.
Irrespective of whether she's a woman or not, that's got nothing to do with it, she's going to send us backwards.
Can't wait to get the hell out of Sydney..
